As far as background noise... you might look into the Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor. It's great for when playing loud and don't want string noise or the loud 'airy' sound when turned up loud. Works great when playing with lots of distortion. But be carefull how loud you turn up the threshold because if you're playing a quiet clean channel it will cut it out if played too softly.
