crashes as hi-hats

I went to go see a sigur ros show recently, if anyone here is into them ('twas an absolutely amazing show). The drummer had massive hi-hats. I'm pretty sure they were actually two 16" crashes.
so i decided to steal this idea because for whatever reason i don't like hi-hats. so instead i'm going to make crashes that i control by foot. yea. anyone have any ideas of how i should go about this though? i'm not sure if i should get 15" or 16" crashes, since I'll probably have another 16" crash on the drumset (im in the process of putting it all together right now). I guess i should probably get the bottom one as heavy as i can find, and the top one pretty light. go for a bright sounding crash... yea. any ideas?
 
Just buy a set of 15 inch hats, or get thme custom made by sabian.
 
what is the difference really between 15" hi-hats and 15" crashes, if you get them the same thickness?
 
The bottom cymbal is usually a heavy cymbal. Two 16 crashes would have an interesting sound, though. I once tried it with 18" crashes, then realized it was a dumb idea because the were too huge to play and they got sloppy. This was about 18 years ago.

BTW, for whatever reason you hate hi hats, two 16" crashes as a hi hat is STILL a hi hat.

As Brad C said, you can get them custom made. I dun think that ZIldjian would do it, but you could probably get Sabian or Paiste to make it. Or, if your committed to the two crash idea, you could use a 16" Paiste DE crash as a top cymbal (sinc eits nice and thin/dark) and a 16" Rude Crash/Ride (which is very heavy) as a bottom.
 
Quick related question: Could I use the top and/or bottom high-hat as a crash?

It counts on what characterisic your looking for. Most likly they won't have enough sustain and just sound like big massive pieces of metal. Just go to your local dealer and get some custom hats made by sabian, i have cymbals made by sabian all the time that don't truely exsist.
 
custom... sounds expensive. i think i'm leaning towards just finding a heavy crash for bottom and a thin for top. and i might do 15" instead of 16"
maybe... naww 16" is cooler.

You can do whatever you want. Will it sound good......? Meh.
My drummer used to use some old hi hats for crashes when he practiced because he has a bad habit of shredding his good cymbals. Of course, he hits them with baseball bats as hard as he can so what can you expect?
 
Zildjian used to make 16" hi-hats. The drummer from CCR used them.

Wow. I think HH is the most expressive instrument on the kit.

I'd like to make a pair of hatted chinas so I could choke them to varying degrees. It would be nice to have the option of having short or long delay on the china. You could also slave it to your existing HH pedal.

I did that once. Tried:

12" wuhan china ontop of 14" wuhan china

12" paiste splash voer 12" wuhan china

14" wuhan china over 14" paiste sound edge bottom

All combinations were cool, but really trashy.

can't really stand most china's either.

i have weird... stuff like that.
(this is also the drumset composed of various sized bass drums and a marching snare by the way)
 
I saw a Terry Bozzio video once......

...where he had the massive like 50 piece set with a pair of china's as HH sitting out to the front/side of the kit. It was one of the later video's where he is mostly playing polyrythmics and using those damned sabian radial cymbals. I love the sound of one of them, but a whole set of them is just too much!

I have used my 14" AAX Dark crash as a high hat top. Sounds ok, but you can't open 'em to far, or it's all strange sounding. Hard to describe. I think both Zildjian sabian and paiste are making 15" HH again. Sort of went out of style for a period, but a great set of hats for three or four mic technique. Cutting in volume, but with a hint of darkness and slosh you just can't get from a 14". I think Mic Fleetwood uses 15" New Beats.
 
Terry Bozio is a pretentious asshat. That shit is hilarious. He is all like I am going to make money putting on drum solos at guitar centers across america.

I understand that that is his thing but I can't hang with it.
 
I hear ya...

I definitely am not a Bozzio fan. I do like watching him, just for the technique aspect, but if gets a little boring after a while. Wan't he a Zappa-phile though? I think the first sort of "rock" band he played in was the Mothers of Invention. That's definitely gotta warp ya for life.
 
I haven't much to add except Sigur Ros are like the most amazing band ever. Do carry on. :)

indeed, they are wonderful. seeing them live was.... i cant even put it into words, it gave my life meaning.
