Will a decent pre-amp SIGNIFICANTLY improve the sound of the vocals if a crappy mic is used? Should a good mic be purchased first? For those who have bought a pre-amp to use with their BR studio how great was difference and what did you buy?

you gotta have a decent mic. in fact, if you run your crappy mic through a good pre-amp, it might highlight the crappiness of your mic. :) I bought a MCA SP1 from Musicians Friend for like $50 a few years back, and it was a BIG jump over the crappy $50 Shure dynamic mic that I bought a long time ago. I was using a Tascam US122 (about $150 on ebay) with the MCA mic, and it sounded a lot better than plugging that Shure mic directly into my SoundBlaster card. :D

my 2 cents.

Cool thanks, I"m going to go in the mic forum and buy a new mic first that's pretty much settled. Then I'll see from there if the quality of the vocals is up to par with the sound quality of the rest of the instruments. I'm stuck on the problem right now that the vocals don't seem to fit the rest of the song because they sound bad. Two worlds apart but I'll start with getting a new mic.
