Cracks and Pops

I get these. For no reason.
I've read the earlier post, but I'm running a much higher spec PC,
I really hate having to keep using Click/Pop eliminator constantly, so can you help me?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say, your sound card is a piece of crap.

DMA enabled is set to No. but it has Ultra DMA ? If I need DMA on it, how do I enable it?
 
some possibilities.
1. get youreself a decent sound card.
2. assuming you have a decent new hard drive. you should enable dma in the control panel. audio multitracking needs this.
if you dont know how - get a tech to check.
who set this system up ? because whoever did it didnt do it right.
i would get a tech to check this system is working properly end to end.
that amd 64 processor is a superb processor.
and your system should be able to perform tremendously well with lots of tracks and plug ins. like about 80 tracks easy.
3. its best to consider two drives. one for windows(a small fast one),
and the second for your tracks. this reduces windows overhead and hard drive head contention.
just some ideas to help.
 
Yeah, the system was bought from Staples, and cost me a fair wak, so buying a new sound card will be my last resort.

I'll take your advice on the 2 hdds, also DMA in the control panel???

Sorted DMA on my C drive. Still there.
Time to start saving for a new sound card....Any suggestions?
 
As far as a sound card, lots of good press on the m-audio Audiophile 24/96 card (PCI). I owned one and although I thought is was a nice sounding card, couldn't get it to work well with my system (chipset problem). I see you have an AMD processor - any idea what the chipset of the system is? Could be something like VIA, etc.
 
are you saying they didnt enable dma ? thats unbelievable.
if dma is not enabled its like running a porsche engine in a nothing car.
heres an idea to at least get you up and running using on board sound while you find a good sound card. (also i would ask around which is the best to get for cool edit pro. )
1. make sure you use only the line in of the onboard sound.
NOT MIC IN. its terrible.
2. plug a mic into your mixer (hopefully you have one), and the line out of the mixer (or direct out) should go to line in of on board sound.
NOTE; youll probably need an adaptor for the on board stereo mini jack.
3. cool edit pro has a nice noise reduction feature. sample a section of noise
and apply to whole track BUT DONT USE HEAVY SETTINGS. use a mild setting. and maybe two passes of mild. if you do it right i think youll be surprised that actually you can get a pretty clean track with some experimentation.
also make sure you tell CE which drivers of the onboard sound to use. prolly wave in and wave out something.
also MAKE SURE you understand windows volume control.
there are two sections . playback applet and recording applet.
make sure line in is not muted. but mute mic in.
and also ensure WAVE OUT is not muted.

also really explore the filtering feature in CE. it can save some poorly recorded tracks. particularly in the 2k to 6k eq region.
one final tip in CE is if you want something in a mix to stand out DONT BOOST EQ IN CE. try cutting the eq at certain frequencies of surrounding tracks.

yeah, um, I dont no shit about all that technical stuff,
but I had to replace my 1/4" to 1/8" stereo adapter jack for my mic because it only cost $4.99, and after a year it just went. Check to see the connection on the mic, im not tryin to be a smart ass, but I dont think that clicks and hisses would be from something other than your sound card or mic itself. Somethings got 2 give, just figure out what gave somehow....
