my gear (I know its not the best in the world, but its what I have to work with for now):Cool Edit Pro, Behringer Eurorack MX2004A, Terratec EWS88/MT, MXL 990 condensor mic, and a few Audio technica ATM29HE's.

Im pretty new to all of this so hopefully there will be a simple solution to this problem. My problem is this crackling that just appears in my multi-track sessions of Cool Edit. There is no way to tell when they will appear or disappear. Somtimes I may be able to record several sessions and never have a problem and other times i may not be able to complete one session with out this noise. If I recored 6 tracks at once, at some point this sound pops up in all tracks at at the same point in every track.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions that anyone might have.

Not familiar with CEP but... could it be buffer size, sample rate, driver issue, cable issue, or processor issue? You might want to post in the software area as well. Good luck!

Oh, by the way, how do you like the EWS88/MT? I plan on getting the newer version the Phasee 88 and would like more insight on either card!

Thanks. Ill check out some suggested settings and compair to mine. And if anyone knows what some of these setting should be feel free to educate me a little. Also, any other suggested software other than Cool Edit?

so far, I really like the card but as I said before, I am really new at this. right now, other than the crackling, Im struggling to get my mixdowns to sound the same on other CD players such as my home stereo or car CD player as they do on my PC monitors. I get the sound pretty close to what I want and when I play it in my car, the highs are screaming and its like there are no mids at all...but im thinking that this is all due to my inexperiance.

MONITORS! While mixing is truly an artform and requires a lot of experience, good monitors will help you translate better to most stereos. I would recommend the Tannoy Reveal Active monitors. I got mine for $699 and they are unbelievable!

As much as I would like to be able to put that kind of money into some monitors, I'm afraid that is a little over my budget for the moment. Right now, I'm looking at maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of that. Any suggestions for that price?

Also...while what im currently using is nothing special, when I listen to any CD or downloaded music or what ever, It pretty much sounds the same on my PC as it does on my stereo... why would my mixes be any different???

I am also working on the tracks that kdoggity has posted for us all to play with. That will be some good practice for something other than my own stuff.

You would think that would work, but it doesn't! Not very well anyhow. If you get a chance to hear some decent monitors you'll know what I mean. For example, the kick drum might sound fine through your PC speakers, but when it goes into a home stereo you might have an unbelievable amount of low or a tingy high sound. Most speakers "color" the sound to make it sound "better". You want "flat frequency response" monitors so you hear the sound exactly like it is "on tape". Make sense?

you can get used to any speakers to a point,,,but as mentioned there,,

the problem is often what you arent hearing, rather than what you are.

for that price range you could get something like alesis m1active mk2s.

i started on those for like,150quid :)

wow....I asked this like 4 years ago....

I dont have any of that gear anymore, but as I recall....the problem was just an over-taxed CPU....
