i've just been playing around with my new toys (condenser mic and mixer) and tried to record a riff in windows sound recorder. there's a bloody awful hiss/crackle in the playback though. i'm running the mixer into the line out of my soundblaster card. what the devil could this be?

>i'm running the mixer into the line out

For monitoring the recorded .wav that will work, but for RECORDING you should run your sources into the LINE IN on that SoundBlaster! :D

Also for clarity of discussion you should refer to the

"running the mixer into the line out"

as

"running the line out into the mixer"

The connection is exactly the same but the (correct) direction of signal flow is indicated as well.

el stoopido!

sorry sorry, i meant LINE IN! so i'm running the mixer into LINE IN and the monitors come out of the mixers CONTROL ROOM OUT. its all very odd...i've just tried to play around with the settings in the control panel and i can't open advanced properties for recording.
hmmm, i'm bamboozled hence my stupity before :)

Your probably clipping the sound card input. Turn down the mixer.

oops, I just realized you were talking about playback. Are you sure there is not distortion going in? Do you have a waveform editor? If so open up the file and see if the waveform goes past the top or bottom edges of the screen.

If it is not distortion on the waveform than it could be too hot of a signal going into the mixer or you may have driver problems with your card. What is the sound card?

its a poopy soundblaster live; not the worlds best i know but alright for now...as for clipping, the input wasn't that loud to start with.
i've just been playing around with the creative recorder you get free with the card and there's absolutely no distortion/hissing/crackling at all. curioser and curioser...does this (maybe) mean that when i get some proper software, i shouldn't have too many problems?

Well Windows Sound Recorder should work but it sucks!

Download a demo of some real recording software.

Among those with free demos are:

n-track www.fasoft.com
Sound Forge www.sonicfoundry.com
Sonar www.cakewalk.com

There are plenty of others as well.

>does this (maybe) mean that when i get some proper software, i shouldn't have too many problems?

No- you'll just have different problems!

JUST KIDDING!!! :D
