My friend just got a br 1180 cd and we have been trying to record guitar on it for 2 days with minimal success. We play punk so we need a distorted sound but a "clean" distortion. That might be an oxymoron but I hope you guys know what I mean. Anyway, we tried micing the amp with some sm 58's which is all we have, except a pg 58, and taking it straight into the br 1180. This was terrible. So terrible that we just immediatly gave up and plugged the guitar straight into the br 1180. We found a preety good guitar effect called "tube stack" and recorded with that. It was a hell of an improvement but not the quality I hoped for. There are lots of cracking noises anytime the guitar is turned up to a decent level. We tried to set the sensitivity lower to where the peak light comes on only at the loudest levels and only for a brief moment(as the manual suggested) but there was still cracking. What can I do? Any hep would be most appreciated.

What was so terrible about micing the amp? Were you using an XLR cable and plugging it into the mic preamp?

If you plug the guitar straight in you will need to use a HiZ instrument input if that recorder has one. Micing the amp should sound the best assuming you have a good guitar sound to begin with.
