Hello,

I'm having to take my puter in for some warranty work and I thought I'd do an upgrade at the same time. I'm running a 700hz Duron, 256M, ME, Lynx One 24bit soundcard. I was thinking about adding at least a 1g AMD Thunderbird.

The tech said he thought the upgrade would be easy but he couldn't specifically tell me till he cracked it open.

Can anyone tell me (generally) if this setup should work?

Thanks,
Rusty K

If your system bus is faster than 100mhz, then go for it. Otherwise, don't bother... get a new mobo instead.

hey tubedude,

Could you tell me where to look that info up...Is it on one of the start up screens?

And which mobo...?

Thanks,
Rusty K

Keep in mind that some of the t-birds run at 100MHz FSB, but DDR, double data rate(all the rest of the upper MHz do this as well, but the FSB changes to 133, hence, 266MHz FSB with the help of DDR, this depends on your mainboard chipset support etc). make an effective bus speed of 200MHz. A little misleading on AMD's part. Your FSB will be set to 100MHz, and the clock multiplier accordingly. I'd be surprised if your board won't handle a 1GHz TB. Maybe consider a 1GHz Duron, they are now available. What's your mainboard? Identify that, go the manufactures webpage and find out what it will handle, easy as that. If it's a generic board, it gets a bit tricky, but between the BIOS and reading the chipset on the mainboard it should not be hard. Bring it to the tech guy.

Emeric,

Hi....My mainboard box says "1st Mainboard" AZ11, chipset..VIA KT133. I'm lost on the bus speed stuff but these are the guys that put my system together in the first place so I'm sure they will be up on it. Of course they don't know that I installed the LynxOne. I don't know if that will make a diff. but I do know the motherboard soundcard had to be disabled for the SBLive I started with. I also know that the AZ11 is not the best motherboard for my purposes but a new motherboard would cost a bit more if I'm not mistaken.

I just want to make a wise upgrade choice....difficult considering my level of computer expertise.

I'd appreciate anything you could add.

Thanks,
Rusty K

Rusty,
That is a FIC mainboard. You can read all about it here (FIC America) or here (FIC Taiwan, english). Lots of support on those websites, FAQ's, downloadable manuals etc. VERY IMPORTANT make sure you know the exact model, down to the letter and which PCB (printed circuit board) revision you have, as the answer to your question may depend on what model/PCB combination you have. There is also a very active FIC newsgroup on usenet, try your favorite usenet search engine, and your answer may be there.
