Ignore the shitty vocals for now. And the imposter sitar. I just want feedback on the acoustic guitar sound. I'm using an Audio-Technica ATM-31 SDC on the 14th fret pointed towards the hole a bit. The only processing done to it was a little bit of EQ: Cut below 80Hz, boost around 200Hz, boost at 1k, and a small (I mean tiny) boost at 2.5-3k.

EDIT: I forgot the link >_<

Sorry, I just cannot ignore the steel drum/sitar/spaceship creature nor the vocals (which aren't too shitty :D ). The guitar sounds fine and your playing is nice and pretty even.

Ah, yes, is that the Zoom 505? I recall that sound.

I like the acoustic tone you've gotten. Mellow and appropriate for the tune.

I have a Zoom 505 - and the left channel sound like patch B4

Seems like Norwegian Wood might be the only popular song appropriate for that patch. I play the song using that patch as one guitar in key of E. The melody notes while strumming work out nice.

As for this performance, guitars are OK, but maybe add some flange to the vocals to give it a more psychadelic vibe.

Any way you can trim off the false starts? They really detract from the song.

The guitar playing is articulate and consistent in tone and volume... a good performance.

The sound quality of the gtr is OK, but it sounds too EQ'd to me... I mean the characteristic that many processors impart that make a file just phasey enough that the liveliness gets sucked out but it doesn't sound noticeably out of phase. No compression was on it? Not even going in?

I'd suggest posting for comparison the gtr track alone and totally unprocessed.

I agree with MadAudio that those false starts should be edited out. I have to hear way too many of my OWN false starts... I don't want to hear everybody else's. :D

By far the most important thing though, IMO, is that the playing is in tune, in the pocket, and has a good basic tone.

Alright, I uploaded the guitar-only track. Thanks for the input so far. I only threw the vocals and poser sitar up as reference. And yes, it is a Zoom pedal. I have the 606 and it's in one of the E banks (I think 5). Quality-wise, that's about as good as I can get it right now. I only have an imp matcher plugged into a mini-mixer (looks like a headphone mixer) going into my soundcard. I think I'm getting a bottom-of-the-line MG mixer from Yamaha soon, and then an Audiophile 2496 soon after that.

EDIT: Might I add that I trimmed off the false starts, took off all processing on this track, and panned it center. Critique away!

There was zero compression used on the guitar. Do you think it might need some?

Listening to the guitar alone, then to the guitar in the mix, I don't think the EQ was causing a problem. I'd guess that the veiled quasi-phasy aspect I'm hearing is coming from elsewhere in the chain. What kind of guitar is it? How does the raw file sound compared to how the instrument sounded in the room?

So the mic is going through a transformer to a high Z unbalanced input? Ahhhh.... bet that's it. Get that mixer with the balanced mic pre's quick.

I've heard the RNC on supernice mode, if set to a very high ratio and a very low threshold get a similar veiled sound to what I was noticing in the gtr in the mix. Dynamically, I hadn't thought it needed it, but hearing the file on it's own, it could maybe benefit from a little light compression, maybe a 1.7:1 ratio with a slow attack (30ms) and release (400 ms) and a threshold low enough to have it working a little most of the time.

Oh, and I would suggest panning the guitar in the center.

Yea, I figured that's what is killing my tone. My soundcard isn't great, but it's not stock. It's the M-Audio Revolution. I got it for movies and listening to music, so I'm not expecting the line-in to be all that great.

It almost does sound like you have compression going, or the mic is too far away to pick up some of the overtones... The EQ is sort of mid-biased, the bottom is pulled out of it, but that's not necessarily bad. It just sort of has that "small speakers" sound going. I dunno; guitar miking is all about choices, and it's so subjective. It is sort of a nice, "vintage" sound, which is definitely apropos for the piece... I guess I can't really carp on it... The space cadet thing threw me though... :)

The mic was pretty close.

Remember that it is a SDC and it is going through a really bad signal chain.
