I recorded my friends band today. They were all in one room and we didn't have great equitment, but I think it came out all right. We want to record it again, and the vocals were only a scratch track. (Our condensers were on the drums) For all of this I think it came out all right. Oh yeah it was recorded in a garage!! I still hope you will take a listen and tell us what to do to make it better next time. I think we will also be recording a hammond organ solo too!!

If you want to know exactly what equitment was used just ask.

Well if you were to do it again, take some time with mic placement and EQ and gain settings.
The guitar is decent at points, but sticks out way too much in the mix when it needs to blend in nicely.
Also, the vocals are stashed somewhere inside the mix, getting cluttered up by the instrumentation.
Also, if you are using a decent mixer, pan out some of the sounds and such.
All in all, the recording sounds very spur-of-the-moment. Make it a studio project and it will assuredly come out a lot better.
Why dont you list your gear that you used to record this?

The vocal track was just a scratch track and that is why it is so low and lost in the mix. As for the gear

drums: one cheap overhead (gxl 1200) Cheap CAD bass drum mic.
guitars: both amps were close miked. One had a sm 57 and one had a gxl 1200.
bass: it was direct.
vocals: some cheap dynamic mic, but this was just a scratch track. We are going to record the vocals with a condenser.

Also I was not really able to get a good sound with the 57 on one of the amps. In the room the amp sounded good, but when miked it sounded like a crappy practice amp with the mids scooped like metal or something. Any suggestions on were to place. Maybe I will have them try my amp or something because I have always been able to get a good sound out of it.

I though maybe you would care to know what instruments the people were playing as well. The guitarists were playing strats and teles through fender amps. The bass player had a fender p-bass. The drummer was playing a vintage rogers set with paiste 2002 cymbals.

OK so there you go. Anybody else have some tips for me?

which are you asking about?

Was the song recorded live (mixed on a real mixer, then output to a stereo recording source), or was it tracked out individually (multi-track recorded, then mixed after playing)?

It was recorded live into a multitrack recorder. (fostex vf-160)

We did it over today and it sounds a lot better. I can't get it up tonight, but by tomarrow I will put it up hopefully) I just found out that there is a hammond organ that we can use also. Any tips on recording it? (I would hate to mess up the sound of that beuitful instrument!)

Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with the anatomy or timbre of the hammond organs.
i wont be able to help with mic placement and such on this.
Maybe someone else would know?

I am going to do a search and maybe post another question about the organ.
