What is ADAT? What is a word clock? What is SPDIF? What is phantom power (for mics)?

ADAT (Alesis Digital Audio Tape) Digital tape recording system developed by Alesis, and since licensed to Fostex & Panasonic, putting 8-tracks of 16-bit, 44.1 kHz digital audio on S-VHS tape.

Word Clock: The synchronizing signal that indicates the sampling frequency or rate of sample words over a digital audio interface.

S/PDIF (Sony/Philips digital interface format, also seen w/o slash as SPDIF) A consumer version of the AES3 (old AES/EBU) digital audio interconnection standard based on coaxial cable and RCA connectors.

phantom power

Condenser microphones have internal electronics which require power (12v or 48v) either from within the mic or from an external source (called 'phantom power'). The external source can be a stand alone phantom power unit or from a mixer with the option to enable phantom power.

One correction on Stealthtech's post.
ADAT is eight channels of 16 to 24 bit and 44.1 to 48KHz sampling frequency. It can also pass four tracks of up to 24 bit/96KHz audio.

It sounds like you are reading specs off a peice of gear trying to figure out what you need. What are you looking for? what are you trying to do?

(of all the stuff you asked about, I would guess that Phantom Power would be the one thing you would want to make sure you had covered so down the road you are ready for whatever mic might enter your stable.)
