Hi all there,Just got a tas.424.mk.2.off e.bay.Cut the plug off to fit a plug here in Europe not realizing that the wires on this one are both black can anyone tell me the best way to find out which wire is which, live and neutral, also, do I have to have an adaptor to use this in Europe or are adaptors built into these machines, sorry to ask such basic questions,I have the manuel but it doesnt have much info on these items,or at least I cant decipher it properly, brand new to recording so take pity on me.Ian

Oh, and at the risk of sounding like "I told you so..."

Page 3 of my Tascam 2488 manual, at the top:

IMPORTANT (for U.K. Customers)
DO NOT cut off the mains plug from this equipment.
:p

My manual contains wire color information but two of your leads are black?

But in case it helps (and I have no idea if this color coding is used across the Tascam product range):
GREEN-AND-YELLOW: Earth
BLUE: Neutral
BROWN: Live

Thank for answering zaphod.b. the manuel Ive got[424mk 2]says not to cut these wires but further on it says if you have to cut these wires and goes on to explain how to rewire giving the colours youve just given me,my problem is that Ive only got 2 black wires to work with, nothing else?

My inclination would be to think that your unit was re-wired at some point with a mains power lead and a plug that does not have an earth ground.

In the U.S. it is common for certain appliances like lamps to have only two wires, both the same color, because the lamp doesn't care which side is hot and which side is return.

And, in fact, most devices that run on AC don't care either, if they are not connected to any other electrical devices. But when you have two devices hooked up to opposite AC polarities and you come between them, you can be in for an unpleasant and potentially lethal shock. (As has happened to me, apparently, with a PA system in one circuit and my guitar amp in another, wired opposite, and nearly getting knocked on my ass when my mouth touched the microphone...)

The only solution that comes to mind before you take it to a qualified repair shop is to open the thing up and see if there is any indication inside where the main power lead connects. There may be some kind of legend inside that indicates hot and return. Earth ground would be connected to the case body.

Good luck!

Many thanks for the info Zaphod,I will open it up tonight and see if theres any markings, thanks again for your valued help,Ian

It seems to me that 424s are known for their proprietary power supplies. When I had one die I bought a dead machine for $22 and got a power supply. I'm in the US though.
