I was going for the overproduced, somewhat sterile production that's popular with the kids these days, while still retaining some of the natural imperfections that make it sound like a band actually played the song.

Comments appreciated! This is the first mix I've done using my MDR-V6's along with my regular monitoring chain, which gave me a better idea of what's going on in the high end. My main gripe with the mix as it stands is the over-pronounced click to the kick, which showcases the drummer's imperfections in a non-flattering way.

Side-note, is there any way to embed a Soundcloud player in here?

Ugh. I fucking hate this kind of music. I can't wait for it to lose popularity and go away. And bass drops are fucking cheese.

/rant.

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest. It's not personal. I think the mix is really good. Fits the genre perfectly. Kick seems fine to me. Toms could use a little more body to them. Little more bass gtr would be good.

Agreed on all counts (although as a metal head, I'm referring more to this specific sub-genre). 'Tis a service industry though *sigh*

I've been having a hell of a time getting toms to sound at all right in my mixes lately. I need to pay more attention to them when tracking. I also need drummers to lay off of the fucking brass and hit the toms like a man, but there's only so much time for practice in the studio...

One little trick I do to get my toms sounding bombastic when necessary is I take all of the close mic'd tom tracks and bus them to their own group track. From there, I parallel compress the snot out of them with a quick release and turn em up. You get normal attack and tone, but then you get a ton of body underneath. You can fine tune it to your liking.

It also helps to utilize heads and tuning that produce maximum tone.

Yep - sounds good overall for metal type stuff. It's punchy and has teh brootalz (i think that's how they spell it lol). I like to hear all the instruments with a little concentration and vocals with minimal. That's what I'm getting so I'm okay.
Side note - WTH is the singer saying - I can never understand that stuff :D:D:D:D:D:D?
