a midi vocal guide track is set up? I keep reading people referring to this to help stay in key while laying vocal tracks but I dont get it.

Im thinking its using the notes in the midi grid to "sing" the notes with a midi instrument (does the instrument matter? violin? bass? drums? hehehe), then sing along with that...but that seems very time consuming...help!

That is an interesting concept and I suspect you've guessed how to do it.

Use a midi instrument that sounds pleasing to 'sing' the song and guide the vocalist. I've often thought about using the choir 'ahhs' and 'oohs' in my Roland sound module to do this.
