Hello Aich Ar. I'm about to put this one up on the shelf for a while cuz I'm all listened out, but I'd like some feedback just before it goes to sleep for a while. Help.

In some parts the vocals are hard to grasp, especially early in the track. The instruments sound like they are arranged in a vase whereas an individual pot for each would allow them to flourish more dynamically. The vocal has a fair amount of width which compounds the all in a heap impression of the instruments. I actually enjoyed the vocal tone and mood which is actually complimented by the musical execution. In my humble opinion the instruments need their own space in time and a half hour panning each and applying some EQ here and there would make this sound a whole lot better.

Tim

Width? It's a mono mix.

But not being able to grasp the vocals is an easy fix. I'll just turn 'em up. :thumbs up:

Yes, and in a roundabout way my comment alludes to the fact it's all heaped in one place which doesn't do it justice to my ear.
Have you considered seeing how it sounds in stereo? Might take an hours work with mono tracks to get a stereo emulation applied to each track but would give it another angle to hear it from.

Everything sounds nicely balanced to me dobro. Only things I got in terms of feedback are that the guitar solo sounds a bit boxy/thin (maybe some changes to EQ/compression would sort?) and there's some sibilence on the vocals that could do with a tweak.

The backing vocals work really well with the lead - is it you on both?

Posted the stereo mix above.

The guitar solo's boxy cuz it was done in a box. ;) (Damage Control Womanizer, I think.) I'll check it and see if some EQ can sweeten it a bit - thanks. Ditto sibilance.

Backing vocals (and bass, acoustic guitar, solo guitar) were done by a guy in Holland called Tjarko Busink.

The stereo version is a heap better to my ear. I have had a good listen and can't really fault the track beyond what would be very subjective personal taste, minor tweaks. I thought I heard a couple of very faint errant sounds early on in the track panned way left but after replaying the section a few times I struggled to find them again so maybe something resonated in da house, good track with a quirky feel to the lyrical and musical approach which makes it quite infectious.

all the best

Tim

Hey dobro-

Good to see one of your tunes in here. Not in a position to offer much mix crit, but I like a lot of stuff in this- the vocal and instrumental arrangements are particularly deft. In places it reminds me of JJ Cale, in others Blondie's Rapture. I'm generally biased against robot percussion but it seems to work here. You've got some good writing chops. Come through more often.
