copywriting question

i want to copywrite my cd, but many of the songs have excerpts of dialogue from movies, radio and television...my guess is that i couldn't copywrite it without the consent of the other copywrite holders, but why would they care if some nobody musician uses a 2 second clip of Al Pacino's voice?

Here is why they care..

If...you make money on it....they will want a piece of it...
They could always claim that your tracks are worthless without the sound bites.

This is a legal issue better answered by others though...perhaps an entertainment attorney.

I am not sure but, I believe that you would have to petition the various owners of the copyright protected sound bites for a liscensing agreement.

That is if they all come from say a film or video which is copyright protected...
If it is from an interview, say on the news....you might be in a better position...they are more than likely copyright protected as well though.
I am unsure but, believe me....it is better to know now than later.

So, hopefully someone else will have a better answer than this.

As Mr Pacino's legal representative I would advise you to cease and desist in using his likeness/voice in your CD project. Failure to do so will result in legal action, as well as Mr. Pacino sending Luca Brazzi to your house to discuss it with you personally.

the answer to your question is quite easy......If you belong to any of the performing rights society call or look up on the internet which publisher controls the copyright, secondly obtain a license to use it....


Lastly, if you do not do this and choose to copyright it anyway, but copyright the material in SR only and as a version this will decrease the liability if your sh** goes mainstream
