OK this is a song we came up with yesterday, and listening back on it, it strikes me that it may have elements in it that are very similar to another (pretty well known) tune.

I'm not gonna say what it is.

There is no need to comment on the main vocal, it was meant as a guide vocal for our other (female) singer.

Also it isn't the lyrics that I'm worried about, it's the certain parts of the melody and/or music.

I know this isn't exactly a 'mixing' request...hope it's kosher.

I really don't wanna spend any more tme on this one if it's gonna be heard as a ripoff, I'm a bit to close to the tune to judge...so, if one person names the tune that entered my head we'll drop it.

song name: Please

Everything comes from something.Nothing similiar comes to mind after listening to this so It cant be a blatant rip off of anything. Then again it could be some obscure song that you are thinking that it sounds like that I havent heard before.

Nothing is "totally" orginally. All songs are influenced by other artists/songs to some extent. There's no way around it.

The parts where you are singing along with the notes on the guitar are the only parts that sound faintly familiar.

Thats exactly what I was hoping...the parts you are talking about are not the ones that are hitting me.

Thanks for the reply ;)

Anyone else ?

Oh all right then...

the song that it reminded me if was a Bill Withers number: 'Ain't no sunshine when she's gone'...

How does copyright work anyway ? It's in a different key, but in relation to the key it's in, the vocal melody does sing the same intervals in a couple of parts...but the song's chord structure is different after that phrase...

So am I being paranoid ?

"Ain't no sunshine when she's gone...."

It sounds a little like that song by ? (bill withers?) I think thats the dude who sang that but your song is substantally different than that. Don't drop the song! You're not ripping anything off. One of my songs reminds me of the Beverly Hillbillies theme. Good little jazzy blues number ya got there!

Very funky indeed

Firstly I`m a newbie but I downloaded both songs becasue they sounded really cool.

I listened to Last Chance Salloon first. I think that is one groovy song. The vocals are superb! For me there was only one problem, the guitars distort rather often, perhaps they were just a tad too loud. The vocals are so good that they should get the most attention but the guitars distort too much for my ears. I think the solo is sweet too. There is a really jazzy laid back feel to this puppy. Oh yeh at 212 there is a nice bridge before the solo, I wish that was repeated.

Just my thoughts, great.

Listening to PLease now.

Yeh, don`t worry about that becasue your song is strongest when the chorus parts slide up. The guitar on this one is recorded much better! That bass is awsome and you have a brilliant voice, it slips and slides around, very groovy. Kind of like Lenny Cravis. "Every time you want to smile" vocal is wicked and takes away any similarity I might be thinking of. (the first every time you want to smile is the best one).

fecking Brilliant, ever watched Lock stock and two smokin barrells. It reminds me of that soundtrack!

Damnation !

Filthy feckin' mp3 encoder !

I hear it now...those bass note rundowns ? That wasn't there in the .WAV file. At least thats my story and I'm sticking to it. :) It happens on some other low guitar notes also. Can somebody suggest a good encoder...maybe I should normalize it while I'm encoding ? I use AudioCatalyst.

Anyway thanks for the replies and the comments Erland and Charva...that'll teach me to listen to my MP3's all the way through before I post them.

??????

It's not the encoder...I can hear distortion in the .WAV file on these speakers (old messed-up Pioneer speakers with screws missing from the cones) but not on my Mackies, which is what I had been listening to it all along on.

What's going on folks ?

I'm going to take this to another thread.

Thanks for the thoughts anyway fellas.

This is a nice song, and I wouldn't worry about it.

There's one point in the song that sounds to me like "If You Want me to Stay" by Sly and the Family Stone. But it took me like 5 listens to hear it, and it's something most people won't probably notice.

Drop it???!!!
Yeah do that, and it will be your loss and everyone else that gets to listen to the homerecorded music here. Do you understand what I'm saying here. Listen to the music you hear everyday, on the radio, your cds, your own stuff, other original tunes here on BBS. Do you ever hear anything that makes you think we homerecorders are trying to copy. I love your tune, and if you decide in your heart that you must drop it, then leave it at NWR for a while so we can download it. Good stuff. I'm ranting because I feel strong about this. I'm going to the cave.

Cheers, man. I'm not familiar with that song, but thanks for your time anyway. Now that my ears have rested, and I've read all the positive replies, I reckon the song stays. :D

It's very flattering to think that our tune can inspire such strong feelings...or is it my attitude to it ? ;

Either way, many thanks, we're going to take your advice. Finished version with female vocals, rhodes, brushes and funky handclaps coming soon. :D

Nathan.
