copying tapes to cd

I have some 35 year old 4 track reel tapes which I would like to copy to CD. I have a sound card in my PC and a 'burning' cd drive. Can anyone tell me the proper way of copying? I hooked up the line out on the tape deck to the line in on the sound card and the sound comes through the speakers. I ht the record button and the system tells me it is recording, but when I play back from the hard drive no sound comes out.

Need a little more information.

1. What software are you using to capture the sound?

2. Where are you plugging the tape player into your computer?

Double click the speaker icon in the bottom right corner to open the windows mixer. Go to Options - Properties - Recording and make sure that Line In is selected.

I have taken cassette tape done on my former 488 Tascam boxes, [I had two of them] and remastered them on a digital box, the Yam 2816 -- got some great results and tweaked the tapes a bit; however, if you have "hiss" it will become greater "hiss" in the digital domain. Better recording also picks up all the errors and we all make those. But, older recording gear, like the Tascam 488, did a great job; however, the hiss is there.

The hiss can be deleted via transfer of tape to wave and editing and then back to CD.

nero 6 ultra is the software with an audigy 2 card from creative. I've plugged the tape player from line out into line in on the card. does this help?
