UGH.........

I've never had more trouble with an issue I think than cutting and pasting in Sonar 5. LOL....It's most likely me but hey, can someone help me out.

All I want to do is "copy" and "paste" a section of a song. Yet when you copy you have to select something like 7 different parameters, and then when you "paste" you have around 3,592 options (LOL).

As an example, I have a song finished except for the leads. Now, I decided the song would sound better if I had the prechorus section repeated. So, I am trying to copy that section (with all the tracks obviously) and past it again. Whenever I do this, no matter which parameters I choose, I push some stuff over, and some of it goes WAY to the right, with blank spaces, the drums are off, timing is switched etc...I'm going mad for what I would have though was a very simple editing tool.

Any help is very much appreciated.

I do this all the time with either one track or many without any problem.

Could you attach screen shots of all the various options and stuff so that I can tell you how to set them up

O.K., I don't know how to get the screen shots up in the message. I have them, so how do I post them?

next time you post something here, scroll down the page until you see a button labled "Manage Attachments". Follow the instructions there.

OK, I've had a look at the images...

Let me make sure that I understand what you're trying to do.

The prechorus starts at bar 3 and lasts for 1 bar (finishes at bar 4)

You want the prechorus to last 2 bars not 1 and you just want to copy the content of the current prechorus into the extended prechorus section

Personally, I'd keep this simple. I see that some of the audio tracks are already split bu lets assume that, for now, each track runs from start to finish as one track. First I'd set the Now Time Marker (song position line) to the start of the Prechorus at bar 3. If you select all the appropriate clips so that they are all black and the press you "s" key on the keyboard it will split all of the selected tracks at the Now Time Marker.

Next I would position the Now Time Marker at bar 4 and repeat the above process. This creates a one bar section that is the Prechorus section.

Then I would select all of the clips to the right hand side of the split I've just created at bar 4 and move them further to the right by just 1 bar, to bar 5, which is the room I'd make for the extended Prechorus section (in between bar 4 and 5).

Next, select all of the clips that are the Prechorus section. Click and hold your left mouse button on any of the highlighted clips and at the same time hold down your keyboards Control key. Now drag the clips to the right by one complete bar into the space you created earlier (in between bar 4 and 5).

Best to make sure that you have your snap set to 1 bar (or measure) so that you are not guessing where you are placing your copied clips.

One last thing to do would be to reposition your markers to reflect your changes. I know that Sonar automates this but I just do it manualy.

Give it a go and get back... In the meantime I'll just check out if it is easier to automatically move those markers (unless someone pops in in the meantime to tell me I've got it all wrong ;))

Doing it this way should not through up all these dialog boxes.

I realise that my words above may be a little bit difficult to follow (mainly because of my lack of ability in explaining myself).

I've just created a load of screen shots to represent what I'm going on about but I can't upload them at the moment because a) they are too big b) I could've loaded them up to my own space but my site is down at this time c) I haven't got any graphics packages on my music PC (which is where I am sat now) and d) it's late and I should be in bed...

I'll come back tomorrow and post 'em up for you, unless you've sorted it out in the meantime

You almost have it and there is more than one way to do what you are trying to do.

First remember Ctrl-Z. It is your friend. It will undo your last action quickly if you mess up.

Then Ctrl-C for copy and Ctrl-V for paste. They make quick work of copy and paste and keep you from mousing all over the menus allowing you to use your mouse for focusing where you want to put stuff.

I would try it this way:

Go to 3:01:000 - Choose Insert (Top Tool Bar) Time/Measure and slap 1 measure in there. This cuts the space for what you want to do.

Then do just as you have done... drag the measure bar from 3 to 4 to select and Hold Ctrl and Highlight Tracks 1/2/3/4.

Ctrl-C (copy)

Just as you have done but you might get in the habit of unchecking markers. The first time you "double-paste" about 25 markers into your project you will see why.

Ctrl-V (paste)

This is what I would do different:
Uncheck link to original clips. It will make things less complicated.
Check Replace Old with New. Destructive editing is far more predictable than blending or sliding. And uncheck Markers.

Starting Track 1 is cool but I got into a habit when copying to paste on a brand new track so as to not take a chance AND to see what I am copying prior to inserting it. It is very easy to get the Starting Time off. So in your case I would Start Track 5.
Then grab each clip and drag it into place and delete the unneeded new tracks.

Now possibly the bad news. You mention drums are off. You are set to 4/4 time with 100 beats per measure. Are you actually playing at that tempo? And is your down beat right on the beat marker? It doesn't look like it to me.

Your drum beat must be seamless to blend. In other words highlight the pre-chorus section just as you have done. Right click about where your Pre-Chorus Marker is, select Set loop points and listen to that one measure loop over and over. Is it in time? With no popping, clicking, etc.

If it's not then you are pretty much wasting time trying to isolate and copy only one measure.

It's got to be seamless and in your case you need 4 seamlessly timed tracks.
