Cool way to get dark drums using duct tape

I just wrapped up traking for a new album and we needed that Neil young "harvest moon" sound for the drums. I asked a friend for ideas and this is what I went with. hope someone finds this helpful.

The first step was to put duct tape on the cymbals and the hi-hat. Changing the amount allows you to adjust the brightness. Then I emptied my leather wallet and taped it to the snare. Voila!! instant dark drums.

I mixed aprox. 80% close room mics (414's) and 20% various close mics. I really killed the hi-hat mic and used the top and bottom snare to bring the brushes up to taste.

i have some of thoes ZXT titanium cimbals, they'd probably sound better with duct tape on them.

don't buy them.

(they were a gift)

Yeah,

The duct tape kills the long ring on the crash and ride. The amount you use and where you place it totally changes the tone. We experimented for a while, and we found some great usable stuff.

A better tape to use might be blue painter's masking tape - because it should peel off without leaving any gunk on your cymbals as long as you don't leave it on for more than 2 or 3 days.

i have used duck tape and it works well and comes off easy if you don't leave it on for a really long time. the drummer i played with back then would fold the duck tape so that it looked like a heatsink. he said you can get more mass of duck tape on a smaller section of the cymbal that way.

I use moongel on cymbals to deaden them etc, I'd NEVER put duct tape on them, EVER.

Or someone who knows as much as him.........i'd like to meet him. He must be a very clever chappie.
