Hi there

All seems quiet on this forum - but thought I'd post a note, just in case any happens to stumble upon it.

I'm using Cool Edit Pro 2.0 - and I've noticed that when I check the input recording levels (the Monitor Record Levels) I get a lot of activity showing up, even though I don't actually have anything at all plugged into the computer. Is there a box I haven't checked somewhere, or a setting I've missed? There doesn't seem to be any audible noise, but there must be something going on for it to be picking up an input signal from somewhere.

By the way, I'm using CEP with Windows XP Pro.

Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

J.

j. the activity your seeing is the inherent noise of your pc sound card. i suspect that you are using the sound card that came with your pc.
these are not good low noise recording quality.
if you post your pc confign in full including the make of your soundcard i can comment further.

Help Manning1!

Hey manning1, Mine does the same thing as TICK. Now what do you mean by (pc confign in full including the make of your soundcard) What are you looking for exactly. SORRY to sound so dumb.

fingers. go to your invoice for your pc or look in windows control panel>>>SYSTEM.. i need to know processor, memory, drives, make of sound card (on board sound chip) and what you have in your pci slots.
then i can make suitable suggestions.
think of it like a doctor diagnosing a patient. i cant do it BLIND. peace.
you can get the make of your soundcard by clicking the multimedia
icon in control panel or look under sound devices in device mgr.peace.

This is what I have come up with hope it helps. SB Audigy Audio [EF40], INTEL PENTIUM III PROCESSOR, 501 NHz, 320 MB of RAM and LOCAL HARD DRIVES ( C:)

fingers. some comments.
1. the pentium 3 is getting a bit long in the tooth.
2. your a bit low on ram. cool requires quite a bit of ram has been my experience as do most modern multitrack softwares including the one
i use. you should definitely upgrade to 512 ram minimum.
3. your using one hard drive ? ...if you are ...this can sometimes be a problem as windows and cool are using the same drive. in the computer industry. we call this disk drive contention. having a second hard drive for tracks is a good idea, and thus the contention prob disappears.
4. is your audigy a pci sound card in a slot ? if it is - how old is it ?
there have been a number of issues with these cards.
particularly - doing 24 bit recording properly. scan the net forums if you disbelieve me.
frankly - and maybe you dont want to hear this...but i have to be frank...
at some point you might want to consider a new amd athlon with 512 ram and two fast hard drives plus a decent delta sound card (low latency)
for example. if you want more info just ask. also tell me if you have any network cards or tv tuner cards or fancy high power gaming cards in your p3. this is important, then i'll comment further. peace.
it sounds to me with nothing connected to the audigy mic or line input
if your still seeing level then that is the self noise of audigy showing up.

I use cooledit and have the creative audigy2 platinum and get the same thing. When I turn down all the input levels and max the master you can really hear it.

Also get noise when moving the mouse around and typing.

Is it the Tron Factor ?

fingers/baycity. the only solution round this prob is to get a better sound card . a PROPER PCI SOUND CARD thats low latency like an audiophile 2496 that a lot of folks like. no fingers that list doesnt tell me whats in your pci slots. sorry.
both of you - just search on the bbs and youll find that a lot of folks are using audiophile 2496. its a low noise cheap sound card.
i ditched my sb card years ago. tried iot for a week and dumped it.
had lots of the same probs, noise and latency. imho sb is only good for midi work.
what you might do is keep it for midi output for example. peace.

glad i could help. seriously fingers - think about getting a new computer.
amd semprons are around 350 bucks in my area. VERY POWERFULL PC.
good for 40 tracks. if you need more - just mixdown the 40 tracks to stereo,
then reimport the mix into cool and add 39 more tracks.
also if you need a great songwriters tool to complement cool sometime,
check out band in a box. (pgmusic.com). if you dont have people to play with , it lets you choose styles (or comp your own) and it creates a back up band in software like drums, keys, bass, guitar, flute whatever you want. then you can do a midi to wave conversion if i remember , and import into cool the resulting audio. this way you dont have to use as many cool tracks, and its less taxing on your computer. this is what a lot of people with slower computers like p3's do. thus by the time you import into cool you only have a few tracks you need to do like lead vocals , lead guitar etc.
much less taxing on your p3 than trying to do 30 tracks in cool.
you would only need about 8 tracks in cool to finish the song.
just an idea.

Hey Manning1

HEY MANNING1, I PLAY WITH A BAND CALLED WWW.BIGINIOWA.COM WE PLAY IN THE CINCINNATI, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, AREAS A LOT. I SING AND PLAY GUITAR, I AM WRITING MOST OF THE MATERIAL IN THE BAND . RIGHT NOW WE ARE WORKING ON A NEW CD. SHOULD BE DONE AROUND THE FIRST OF THE YEAR. PLEASE LET ME KNOW THE BEST WAY TO GET SOME SONGS OVER THE INTERNET. IT WOULD BE COOL TO LET EVERYBODY LISTEN TO IT. YOU CAN BE AS CRITICAL ABOUT IT AS YOU LIKE . I CAN TAKE IT. HAVING A LOT OF FUN WITH IT AND WOULD LIKE TO SHARE IT WITH EVERYBODY. THANKS!

you can set up a band site on soundclick.com for free.

also nowhereradio.com but i know little about them.peace.

ps. if you need a mp3 convertor to convert your wave stereo masters to mp3 , check out the free LAME and many others at hitsquad.com.
also if you need vocal pitch correction software and midi sequencing software. try powertracks from pgmusic.com. it has a lot of features missing from cool. with both cool and powertracks youll have a powerfull recording system. there are also some usefull mastering features in powertracks.
ask on the user forum as well. youll learn a lot about midi etc and recording techniques and mastering. peace.
