cool edit plugins?

I just started working with someone who uses Cool Edit pro 2.1 for demo purposes. Were using it for long distance collaboration purposes but I have a few questions. My "real" setup is all outboard gear with a mixer and adats and that sort of thing. I have some experience with software but not enough to not sound like a retard. The cool edit help files are krap in my opinion so here is my question.
What type of Plugins can Cool Edit work with? I found some neat looking Free Vst's but I noticed there is no VST folder in Cool Edit. Can cool edit use VST effects? Otherwise what type should I be looking for? Thanks in advance
 
I could very well be wrong here (so i expect to be told im wrong) but i honestly can't remember being able to use VST's in cool eidt pro 2.1. I know you can use Direct X though.
 
CEP 2.1 will work with DirectX and with VST using a wrapper. VST instruments do not work. The issue of free wrappers has come up before and you might do a search here to find a free download, which is what I did.
 
Thanks guys, i found out about the free VST wrapper as soon as I posted. As usual I should have just kept reading before I posted. WIth that said does anyone know anywhere with some good free
VST or DirectX plugs?

As in free, i dont mean pirated.
 
Ok i got the wrapper and everything going but for some reason when I try and apply the VST to the track, it locks up. I can preview and tweak and everything but as soon as I try and write it to the track, it freezes. Any ideas?

I went back to cool edit 2.0 from 2.1 and the wrapper plus all of my vst's are working fine now. Thank you for the link
