I just recently got a used Terratec EWS88MT. It works with n-Track, but not with Cool Edit, and I've tried everything. Device menus, checked my install sequence, made sur all the cables were routed properly and all the right knobs were going the right way!

Anyone using this card with CEP?

Thanks.

Hey, Rog. As a matter of fact, I'm using the EWS88D (two of them, at the moment) with CEP and also Audition. The difference between the MT and the D versions is that the MT has an analog input breakout box and the D has ADAT Lightpipe I/O. Otherwise they are the same.

First, go to Terratec's website and download the latest drivers. There's a fairly recent update posted there. Do the usual routine of making sure the card shows up without an exclamation point in Device Manager, is selected in Windows Mixer, not muted there, etc. Call up the Terratec Control Panel. There's a mixer window that will show you if the signal's getting through. Then go to Options/Device Settings and see if "Try As WDM" is ticked. My Terratecs would not work that way. I had to select the MME drivers (if I remember correctly) for CEP to record/play back. You have to select each I/O in turn, by the way, to set each track to whichever way it works.

I get 8 simultaneous I/O with a single Terratec card, and I'm able to use the ASIO drivers with Audition 2.0 (ASIO won't work with earlier versions, or with CEP).

Hey lp,

I haven't tried the MME! I get in a bit of a whirl after a session of trying to get something to work in the PC, and am liable to overlook a thing. I'll check that out, thanks. Maybe I'll be able to return the EMU... silly me. :p

I do have the EWS88/MT and also use Audition.....If you have installed the drivers from the CD, then you will need to be very careful when you download the new drivers and install them. The driver you will download will be the one for the Phase88. make sure you look for the instructions on installing them. I just downloaded and installed and I had all kinds of trouble. did it several times...uninstalled, reinstalled, removed card and put it back, all kinds of stuff...once i followed the instructions to a T, everything worked fine.

now...as LPDeluxe said...you must make sure you have your correct inputs and outputs chosen so that you can get sound to your monitors...also, in your multitrack view, go to Options > device order. Make sure all of your outputs are listed in the playback tab and the inputs should be listed in the recording tab

Im sure we can get ya going man....hope this helps...

Reiterating specifics to me seems to help!

I've got cables coming from outs 1 and 2 from the Terratec, going in to a stereo input on my little mixer, with the main outs from the little mixer going to my monitors. The EWS software mixer window panel indicates "WavePlay 1/2" is going to "PCI Out 1/2".

I'll re-check everything in the Device Order / Settings in Multitrack, and yep- I know it's the driver for the Phase 88... I installed the software first, then the PCI card. Yes? {EDIT: Can't remember which is first, but I did it right- I'm sure of it!} This is the exhaustive part. You should've seen my pathetic performance trying to get this MOTU thing working. I'll spare you the play-by-play. (Heh-heh... lpdeluxe chimed in, on my thread chronicling my disaster, "I'm glad it wasn't me, Sloom!"...:o) I sold it, thankfully! :D

I'll be reporting back...

"I'm glad it wasn't me, Sloom!"

I recall having to tinker with the different choices in Options/Device Order to get what I wanted. Luckily, once I got the right inputs selected, I've never had to go back to it, but the flip side of that is that I don't remember everything I did. I'll take a look at my configuration tomorrow and report back (today was my wife's birthday, so I didn't have time).

Note to self: check out selections in Terratec Control Panel, Cool Edit Pro Options/Settings, Device Order....

Hey, whatever you got I'm listening. It would be fun to only have to have one soundcard- I don't see needing more than 8 inputs on my system, and I'd return the EMU, I suppose! Less output on the money front is always cool right now!

I'm not sure, but I am thinking the EMU 0404 sounds a bit brighter or clearer than the Terratec. The EWS88MT seems to come off as a bit 'darker' or 'closed' sounding. Maybe it's an output issue from the cards' individual mixer settings? More to look into. No matter.

Thanks lp, and thanks thajer.

try setting it to "digital mixer -> pci outs 1 & 2"

thats how I always had mine set...

Rog., I still have Cool Edit Pro up and running on my computer, along w the 3 versions of Adobe Audition, and I know it works! I'll check it out in the morning and post the settings here.

The latest version of Audition uses the ASIO drivers, but they apparently coexist with no problems (at least for me) with the MME drivers I'm running for CEP. I started using CEP again because opening sessions recorded in earlier versions in 2.0 causes some glitches, and Audition 1.5 won't let me run 2 sound cards (which CEP and AA 2.0 have no problem with). Even though I can't use the Mackie Control with CEP, since I'm not recording new tracks to the older sessions I don't need it as much.

Anyhow, sit tight for a while and I'll get back to you.
regards

I'm in no tizzy lp, I appreciate your guys' help! Sittin' tight, hangin' 5...

Here it is....

The Terratec Control Panel "Settings" shows "Source" as being WavePlay 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8; "Port" as PCI 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8.

In Cool Edit Pro 2.0, I see Options/Device Order/Playback Devices as
Unused: EWS88D System Wave, S/PDIF, Wave Mapper;
Used: EWS Wave 1/2 [EV], 3/4, 5/6, 7/8. The EV means that, in Edit View, channels 1 and 2 are used for playback. This is accomplished by highlighting 1/2 in the "Use" column, and ticking the box below that says "Use In EV."

Recording Devices are set the same.

In Options/Device Properties try unticking "Try as WDM" if it's ticked, or vice-versa. You will need to do this separately for each track pair.

The Terratec manual (it's the same book for the EWS88D and the EWS88MT) says:go to Start/Control Panel/Multimedia/Audio tab and set the Playback "preferred device" to "EWS88MT Monitor WavePlay" and the Recording to "EWS88MT Digital Mixer."

Hope this helps. As I said, this all works fine for me.

I wrote it all down, and will go dig into it. Thank you very much for your trouble lp!

The EWS88MT is only working in n-Track as ASIO (??). So I have the Terratec set as ASIO for n-Track, and I wonder if that's the reason it's not working for Cool Edit? Naturally, it's not set this way in Cool Edit... but I'll check on your new info first, as that may be it. After supper I'll find out, and get back. Cool man...

Enjoy dinner.

As I said earlier, MME and ASIO happily coexist on my computer, using the same sound cards. Just to make sure, I recorded into CEP this afternoon. There IS a limitation of using the ASIO drivers for more than one device, but that doesn't apply here.

Well, I just ran Cool Edit from the EWS88MT. I did the Device list as you indicated, as close as I could get with my particular situation, and it works! (What a surprise, right?!) And I did a little more comprehensive A/B with the EMU, and the Terratec is actually better sounding than the EMU! Not sure how I had it set last night, but it's rockin' now, allright!

I'm now thinking of keeping the EMU anyway, as that DSP processing idea might come in handy. Could be good for tracking with the DSP on-board compressor as an insert for peaky instruments. I dunno, just thinking out loud. Don't know about using them together, though. With 8 I/O on the Terratec, there's not really much point in that, I think.

But anyway, thank you for the help there, lp. And thanks, Jer. Feeling much better about this!

Oh- and happy birthday to the wife, lp!

Too cool.

By the way, my wife just returned from a visit to Manchester-by-the-Sea Mass, during which she visited your lovely state. I said, "why doesn't [her friend] come down to Texas in freakin' FEBRUARY instead of you going up there????"
cheers
