I just recently installed Cool Edit 2000 with Studio and Audio Clean-up plug-ins. The question I have is when I record directly to the computer with line-in from the instrument, it only records on one channel not stereo. If I patch in through my 4-track analog recorder, it records in stereo. Did I just answer my own stupid question? Also, on my Compaq Presario with Windows '98
and ESS Allegro sound card, I am unable to record in the 4-track Studio plug-in. I can record one track and it plays back fine, but when I go to lay down track #2 I get horrible static and cannot hear track #1. I'm thinking I need a new sound card, but which one?
Thanks much in advance
Paula Brown.

Yep, you kinda answered it....the source straight from the instrument was mono, so it will record mono...your 4 track is a stereo source, so you can record stereo.....

the static you hear on that 2nd track may be clipping.....listen to the 2 tracks that youve recorded separately and see if they are ok...if so, you just need to bring down the level you are playing them back at....

Digital is a totally different animal as far as levels and distortion....in analog, your meters can go over 0db with no problemo...go over 0db in digital and the track is trash.....lyou can have a few different tracks that played separately, will not distort, but when played together, the levels add up...so if track 1 is at 0db and track 2 is also, played together they will clip.....its like 1 screaming kid is not so bad, but get 4 of them together and guess what.......

Thanks for the fast reply

Thanks a whole lot for the info. I actually have Cool Edit 2000 on both of my computers. The other computer is a HP Pavilion 878 something. I don't have any problems with the 4-track Studio plug-in on that computer, just the Presario. I think the problem is with the sound card, cause I can just barely hear with speakers or headphones. On the Presario, I have muted the line input and still get the horrible static when I try to record on the second track. CE help says something about a full duplex sound card and I'm not sure what that is, but thanks again for the much appreciated help.

a full duplex card is a soundcard that can record and play back at the same time...most cards these days are full duplex, but with Presario, who knows...I have a Pavillion and its onboard soundcard is full duplex.....

double check that you are going into the line in and not the mic in, and from there it seems to be a routing issue.....dont mute the line in, because that is what you want to record from....mute everything else.....

Thanks again

I've tried just about everything. I know I need to update the sound card. Do you have any thoughts as to a good one at a reasonable price? Don't laugh, but for $100.00 or less?
Thanks again.

Guitar Center was selling some darn good cards back in October..the Emagic Audiowerk2 and the Seasound SoloEX were both $99....i think both were discontinued, but good cards.....

also, a basic Soundblaster Live Value card is not a bad option......

thanks

Thank you for the input. I've been kind of scoping the Soundblasters, but not really familiar with any of the makers of sound cards excepte ESS Allegro, and I'm not impressed with that one. Thanks again.
