I think the reason the price is so high is because #1 it is so slimlined and #2 it can be used to view more than one system... it is really made for those big racks with like 5 or 6 systems in them and then you would add this and could switch the monitor between the systems for any work that needed done.
 
From the picture on there it looks like they just mounted a laptop display & 'board onto some rack drawer hardware. Good idea but it looks pretty cheesey for that price.

I know that's what it's generally meant for, and that's why it's marked up so high, but that doen's make me any happier =(

I really thought that could make an awesome portable recording rack, better than a laptop would be.
 
Well- the concept is right there. Nothing preventing you from buying a 1U slide-drawer and then stuffing a 15" LCD and a keyboard in it, is there?

Or are you gonna wimp out and wait for some clever character in Seoul to do it for you?

Actually the more I think about it- the idea of simply securing the flatscreen and keyboard/pointing device inside a rack mount drawer makes more sense than the cutesy fold out deal. You have more freedom to move these components relative to the rack.

Check this thing out as another option. I know you want a pretty rack mount case, but why?? I mean is it really that big a deal to make 2 trips?? Anyway, this thing would fit nicely in a back pack with an LCD monitor. Also it supports all current AMD processors and has 2 pci slots. I can say that Shuttle makes some good stuff, so you won't regret it. I wanted one of these sooooo bad...yet I can build a computer with an Athlon XP 1800, 256 mb ram, Via266a chipset, and a 40 gig 7200 rpm drive, and 300 watt power supply for less than that. So, I figure I'll just stick a handle on top of my case! Take a look, it is another option.

Maybe not a back pack but certainly a lunch-box looking case... :)

I agree- certainly an option. But so is a standard tower. They don't travel that bad if you're cautious. They just look weird.
Take half of the money saved and extrude a custom cushion to box the tower with that expanding spray foam.
 
1u and 2u cases (never seen a 3u) are nice if you want to keep everything you can in a rack. The price for the cases are $80 to $120 over standard mini-tower-under-your-desk cases. 1u cases are very demanding as to acceptable components. If you are a casual builder, use 2u or 4u cases. www.mwave.com has a good selection.
 
yeah but 1U cases can only use 1 PCI slot... 2U cases can only use 3 PCI slots...

they do make 3U cases and those are high enough that they will accept as many PCI and AGP slots as your motherboard has... I thought about getting a 4U before, but now that I see 3U are big enough for all components, I think I may go with a 3U case...
