converting up in bit depth

So, suppose I have an entire project trakked in 48000, 16-bit. AND I wish it was all 24-bit. Because all of my equipment is 24-bit. SHOULD I, and if so HOW SHOULD I convert these files to 24-bit?

Multiply it by 1.5 seriously though, it can't be done. Yeah you could physically run the 16bit D/A through 24bit A/D again, but you'd still have 24bit - 16bit sound . . . make sense.
It's like taking a JPG image file thats low resolution and trying to make it high resolution. You can't go back once it's degraded.

actually, if I double the resolution of an image, I gain a LOT of flexibilty in my editing phases.. though the image isn't as clear as if I started that way, it's easier to work on than before. Is it really like an image, though?
suppose I did the conversion in cool edit or sound forge or something.. not adding any d/a or a/d conversions.. just a d/d. Would it help, hinder or do nothing?
