converting to mp3

I make a mixdown from my mix at 16/44.1, then I convert it to mp3 for internet uploads.

Will it work if I make the mp3 from 24/44.1? Or do mp3s always have to be made from files that would play on a CD player?
 
I mixdown to 24 bit and use SoundForge 5 for some final polish and then export to mp3 directly from the 24 bit file. I'm sure it's internally being converted to 16 bit along the way somehow, but it seems logical to me to use a single app to dither and compress in one fell swoop.
 
Of cause you can do that, in the same way as you can burn a CD from a 24 bit file.
However, not dithering down to the right bitrate will result in loss of quality
 
Ok, I'll bite. As I understand it (please correct me if I'm wrong), dithering has to take place for either MP3 encoding, or for CD burning. Other than the application that's doing the dithering (i.e., Easy CD Creator vs. Sound Forge), how would this result in a loss of audio quality?
 
I do have an understanding of dithering, why it's necessary and what it does (I've read a few essays on it already). My assumption (again, correct me if I'm wrong), was that an app like Sound Forge dithers automatically upon conversion (export) to a 16 bit format (MP3 or wav). So then, why would there be any loss of quality if it was, in fact, being dithered.

I think I answered my own question, I just wanted to make sure I hadn't missed something along the way.
 
Yeah, that's what I was wondering as well. I dither from 24 to 16-bit. When I convert to mp3, does that involve another dither? And if so, why dither twice? And if Sound Forge does the whole thing in one click, does it involve one dither, or two?

If you say it enough times, it starts to sound stupid, yeah? :D
 
IF your encoder will make an MP3 from a 24 bit file, then the encoder is obviously doing the dithering....and just like all encoders arent created equally, all ditherers (is that a word) arent created equally....dithering is a critical step and you want the software best suited for the job to do it.....

ever used N-Track to dither and encode?..its not pretty and i have the evidence....
