I don't get how to convert MIDI in audio. Once I program all the drum parts in MIDI, how do I get them to sound like the drums in my triton LE? Could you explain step by step how to program drums with MIDI then converting it to audio using an external synth(triton LE)? I'm using Cubase LE btw.

MIDI cables from computer to Triton.

Audio out cable from Triton to soundcard line-ins of computer.

Play MIDI file while recording audio ins to new audio track.

I just have to select what sound I want in the triton first right? Say I want drums, i'd have to select the type of drumkit I want on the triton first correct?

Right.

A drum voice in the Triton will have one key assigned to each drum sound. If you haven't done so already, set up a blank sequence and get the metronome going at a comfortable speed. Then play the keys to put in a drum pattern. Then you'll be ready to record the drums to an audio track in Cubase.

Here are links to three good articles on midi basics - part one and part two and part three.

thanks. Finally someone is actually helpfull answering this question. I'd have to record each drum part separatley though right? Like first bass, then snare, then hi hat, etc. I find it easy to record the snare with the bass drum. It'll take some getting used to.

Just for the sake of getting each part the way you want it, yeah --- record each part separately to the Triton sequencer. But then you can put effects and do a submix of the drum kit inside the Triton before recording it to a stereo audio track in Cubase.

Recording one drum at a time to Cubase might be easy for a few bars but with a sequence eight or sixteen bars or longer you'll get into some real sync issues with the drums drifting off from eachother.

If you want some real flexibility, record the midi notes in Cubase and play them back on the Triton. If this interests you pm me and I'll lay out some easy instructions.

I just want to use the cubase sequencer. Can't I just do everything in cubase?

Sure. It will probably be easier. Make sure you you turn off the local (check your manual) otherwise you will echo notes. Everything should be routed through cubase first, so Keyboard midi out to cubase midi in, select that midi port as your midi input on the midi track, and the tracks midi out should route back to the keyboard. That way anything you play will be routed through cubase first for recording.

sscientist...Do you have AIM? I have triton LE questions.
