I did this to show the difference between good external converters and good soundcard converters.

THe converters being compared are Lucid ad9624 and M-audio Delta 1010. I used each piece's internal clock for the testing.

I matched the volumes then recorded out the roland jv1010 sound module mono, on the left output in both cases. There has been no processing on the file and it is 24 bit/44.1. File size is 5megs I did not even raise the volume.

I also put an mp3 file for those who dont have access to 24 bit soundcards. THe mp3 file is 16 bit 44.1 128kbs mono.

I recorded bass, piano, guitar, horns and drums.

To listen to the wav, you have to download it and remove the .mp3 at the end. The file name is converter.wav.mp3(nowhere would not let me put it up as a wav.the title is

converter test

The mp3 can be played direct below

both samples are contained in one file. I have not told you which one is which, I would like to know if you guys can hear a difference or if the delta 1010 stands up to the lucid(I can hear a difference)

So tell me which one you think is the better recording and tell me, on a scale of 1-10, how much better you think it is, considering that it cost an extra $800
peace

next week I will be comparing the delta 1010 ,lucid ad9624, and lucid genx-6 clocks

ps.

If you open the file in an audio editor, you will notice that one recording has switched phase or something .You might want to mess around with this to see if it changes anything

Also, listening on headphones might make things a little easier to judge.

killer test dude!!! I dont know why you have not got any replys. Anyway, I believe the first sample is the delta and second is the lucid. On a scale of one to ten... I give the first one an eight and the second a ten, a 2 point difference...Come on guys what cha think??? Put your ears to the test...scared, huh???

hmm glamslam,

I sent you an email with the answer. It might surprise you.

On these PC speakers I actually couldn't hear any difference. Keep in mind the difference is cumulative. Track a 30 second 12 track song with the delta, and then record the same song exactly the same though the Lucids and mix em both down. There should be a more noticible effect. Try doing lots of layers and and then posting. Might be a better test. :)

tubedude,

If you have an excellent converter and a subpar one, you will be able to hear the difference(on full range speakers).

The fact that you could not hear the difference may mean two things. One, the delta 1010 has a set of very good converters or
2, maybe the pc speakers make everything sound the same, as some speakers are wont to do.

the second one is better

The bass sounds grainy on the first mix like a lack of
resolution. I wonder how the 88824 lucid compares?
Glad to see someone putting it out there like that
I'm no pro but Ive been told I have a good ear,
time to find out

G

another vote for number two as being the better one.

Well, check your email to find out if you were correct.

So, how much better would you say your choice of number 2 is on a scale of 1-10.

rating

I would say the 1st is a 8 and second is a 9 but
I'm not in a quiet room right now. The 2nd one just
sounds more like it's here with me and not a digital copy.

My Vote is for 2 as it sounds most like my delta card but there is nothing here to get in the way of a successful recording.

hey hippo. Are you saying that 2 sounds the best ? or that two sounds most like the delta.

You have the answer in the mail.
Could you judge them on a scale of 1-10 though.

smoove G,

Wow, A nine and a ten. Thats little difference for $800. BUT, what would be a ten? Cranesong hedd?

to tell you the truth the second set had more bass. i dont know how different A/D converters have different responses but i guess somehow. I have no idea, boosted levels dont always mean thats good. To tell you the truth the Delta 1010 NEVER has been given a bad response for A/D converters. Only the D/A which i have heard deficiencies in. I haven't heard one person bash it.
