convert into a Lapsteel?

Hey. I have an old Kay electric guitar (one of the Les Paul copies) just lying around. Since the thing is a heavy beast, I kinda wannna turn it into a lapsteel. I just want to be able to lie it on my lap (or table) and play slide on it (ideally using a nice twin, some delay, and a volume pedal!)
How does one go about doing this? Do I need a new bridge or nut? Do I need to re-adjust the neck or something? I wanna do this cheap and by myself...so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have pondered doing this, except turning an acoustic into a dobro. I'd think you could buy a raised nut and then raise the action to high heaven. You'd only need to go high enough to eliminate any buzz...

there's such a thing as a nut extender that basically fits over your existing nut taking away the radius and raising the action a lot. Then adjust your bridge saddles such that the radius is flattened out. Presto! Instant lap steel.
