convert 2trk tape into digital

I found some of my old miwdown recordings that were on 1/4 inch tape and i want to put them on my computer so I can eventually burn them on to compact disc. I realize that the conversion process of anlouge to digital can often lead to degrating sound. What sort of equitment do I need and how would I get my 1/4 tape recordings onto my computer without getting a crappy murk sound???? Thanks for any advice.
 
You just need a good tape deck that is properly cleaned and calibrated and a good sound card. You can spend anywhere from $150 on up for the card so it depends on your budget. You also need software. For simple 2 track stuff CoolEditPro is decent but SoundForge or Wavelab would be best (and more expensive).
 
The properly-adjusted tape deck is probably the trickier part. Does the tape have tones? Do you have a 1/4" deck in the right format (half-track? 15 ips? what format is the tape?).

As for the analog-to-digital converter (which could be in a soundcard, or not), there's tons of information, reviews, test results, etc. etc. all over the Internet.

If the end result is important to you, and you're not starting out with the necessary gear (particularly the tape deck), you're probably better off having somebody do the converion for you. I doubt it would cost a ton.
 
hey thanks..... Paying someone to do the conversion for me sounds like a pretty good idea. Now where can I find someone to do that?? I know none of my freinds got the equitment.
 
I have wondering the same question myself. I have a fostex x-55.

what about specific directions? noone has any links? You need a tape-deck, I can't just plug a few chords into my 4 track and pc and convert? :)
