Controlling volume in Edit Mode AA1.5, + 2 more

I can't seem to find any sort of volume control when I am in edit mode within AA 1.5. I set the edit wave output to my monitors, I also have multitracking set to output to my monitors. But when I go into wav edit view their is no volume control and after searching the program and the help manual I still don't see any way to control volume other than going to my monitors and manually turning each one down. WTF?

Second question:
I also have a problem with recorded signal level. The monitoring level meter shows the track audio loud enough to clip on occasion, but when I listen back to the recorded track and look at the wav I get an almost inaudible small wav. What am I missing here? The monitor meter shows my level is loud enough on the way in.

Third Question:
WHy can I hear the other tracks playing when I record say a 3rd track, but when I record the FIRST track I can't monitor it while recording?

I am on a PC using a Delta 1010 BTW.

#3. Audition 1.5 doesn't have real time monitoring capabilities. 2.0 does.

#2. I'm not sure what the issue is here.. can you hear what you recorded? Does the waveform appear small, or is it large and clipped?

#1. In Multitrack View, click on the "Out" button on any track. Select your Soundcard, and hit the button that says "Use in EV" which means, "Use in Edit View". That should fix that.

I believe your problem is not that the EDIT mode volume is too loud. Instead it is that the MultiTrack volume is too low. Edit mode is sending the wav file straight to soundcard output without going throught the software mixer or effects. It sends it at full volume and unobstructed by any parts of the software. The only way to bring it to a manageable level is with outboard gear after the soundcard. Your mixer output should also be at or near full volume. I lot of home studios are using products like the Mackie, Big Knob or Presonus, Central Station for D/A conversion, volume control, and routing duty.

Again, I think you have a volume low somewhere in the multitrack portion of AA. Right click on the track you want to record on and choose Track Properties. Make sure the volume fader is on 0dB, (this is actually 100% or unity.) You should control the recording level with your outside mic preamp not in the recording software, or soundcard.

The only way (in AA1.5) to hear the same track while recording is to have your soundcard loop it back out to an output jack simultaneously while recording. I am not familiar with the Delta 1010 but, some soundcards come with a routing control program or mixer just for this purpose.

In recording mixer I choose line in. In playing mixer I uncheck “MUTE” at LINE IN and
then I slide up volume fader for LINE IN and if necessarily, main volume too.
It works every time. This is not the first time this issue is being brought up and
it seems to me that maybe I don’t understand what is this issue really about.

I havn't used the 1010, but the manual indicates that you should use the "patchbay router" section of the M-Audio software mixer app. Here is an excerpt

"Selections five through eight (in the Patchbay Router) connect the hardware analog inputs 1 & 2, 3 & 4, 5 & 6, or 7 & 8 (respectively) directly to the 1010’s hardware analog outputs 1& 2. For example, if "H/W In 1/2" were selected, any signal present at the IN1
port will be copied to OUT1, and any signal present at the IN2 port will be
copied to OUT2. This same behavior applies to "H/W In 3/4", "H/W In 5/6",
and "H/W In 7/8" when selected."

Based on that, you should be able to hear your input from one of these outputs in real time, and route the previously recorded material from Audition to "WavOut 1/2"

I figured it out

I had to select monitor/mixer as input output 1/2. Once I did that I was able to route the output from 1/2 to a patchbay and into my headphone amp. Then the 1/2 inputs were hot for tracking.

I then adjusted all the volume levels so edit mode wouldn't be so loud. Everything seems to be working good. Although when the volume clips I get a nasty high pitched squeal in my ears. And I only get real time monitoring in one ear unless I choose mono on my headphones or record to track 1 left and track 2 right at the same time. I'm getting there. Slowly.
