Controlling a taperecorder from the Mixer?

I own a Fostex A80, and R8

Could I modify my Mixer to engage start stop and dubstart using the faders or modified send-buttons?
I lost the manuals. but I thought the fostex's recognize midi-control signals
for play, stop, dub etc.
It would be cool.

Some tape machine can be synched up to computer etc but may well required a synch strip using up one of the tracks & a synch device.
