Control Surface Idea

We all look for ways to get 'hands-on' with our DAW. I was looking through all the new control surfaces and there are a few that boast the fact 'you wont have to use your mouse as much'... and it came to me. The technology has been around for years, no its not complicated motors, its not even anything MIDI related.

What if you were to have an touch-screen display (or multiple) connected to your daw, facing upwards, angled slightly. You could either buy touch screens, which have gone down massivly in price, or the touch screen conversion kits which you can buy now.

Imagine having 3 or so screens face-up, on your desk. Not only could they display a lovely looking mixer which you would be able to control totally 'hands-on' but you could pull plugins up, or anything for that matter. Infact, you could say you 100% wouldnt ever need to use a mouse again, if you didnt want to!

If i had the spare money, i would most definately get rid of my control surfaces and give this a go. Ive got a feeling others might catch on too!

Let me know what you think,

TM

And for the super-rich, you could get those fancy new 3D touchscreens that aren't even for sale yet, only sciencey stuff.
That's actually a really amazing idea, though. I bet in three years we'll see companies making virtual mixers that you can control with your hands, after having read your post.

Awesome. Check out this demonstration too.

I've seen that one. Crazy stuff. There's a lot of technology to look forward too if we're still here to enjoy it in 10 years. :D

This is exactly the stuff I mean! Never mind expensive motors that are boun to fail, just wack it all on a screen and we'l be done with it. We could even have rackmount sized screens to load up plug-in's on our actual racks!

That would be so freaking awesome.

The thing is, its such a huge possibility. It seems to be the only way to further the digital workspace.

It would be almost a virtual reality, you would be sitting in an old style analogue studio, but it would all be created inside the computer.

The technology is here, I might save up and make a prototype =]

Have you ever taken a look at Reason's layout?

What about feel though? Guess we'll all see.

Yea i was thinking that the mackie desk had done it. Is it touch screen though?

I know many programs have onscreen racks but im talking about an actual 12 inch screen that screws into our racks that we can send a plugin to, it displays it, and you control it as you would if it were that real device. It may be for show, but then its just the same as all these control surfaces, it puts things in a position for us, so we can physically control it.

There's nothing like the feel of a big chunky knob in your hand.

Yea, a pair of big chunky knobs is even better.

the whole multi touch screen thing is coming. there are touch screens (not multi touch) available at local stores here but i haven't looked into their limitations. Have you seen this video?: https://youtube.com/watch?v=89sz8ExZndc

haha damn that touch screen even has a virtual lava lamp. it's perfect for the recording studio.

oh and Reason's layout is pretty awesome.
