Does anyone have links to info regarding the construction and installation of studio windows?

Thanks

It would help if you describe exactly what you are doing. Single wall? Double wall? RC iso wall? Concrete block? Standard wall construction? See what I mean. They all require a different set of criteria. I can tell you this. There is no sense in suggesting a window installation that has an STC of 45 if you have doors that drop it to STC 34 more or less. Weakest link syndrome is the problem. For someone to tell you how, they need to know the construction in the room.

Here are the two most important tips I can think of:

-First off you want two panes of glass, and they need to be two different thicknesses (so that they vibrate at two different frequencies which will decouple them acoustically). Go as thick as you can afford (mine are 1/2" and 3/4"). The pane in your recording room needs to be angled down slightly (the top of the pane should be at least 3" closer to you than the bottom of the pane). It doesn't hurt to angle the control room side pane either, but I find the sound room side to be the most important.

-Once you find out the exact dimensions of the pieces that you need, call EVERY glass place in your area for a quote. After calling 5 or 6 glass places I found the average price for the two pieces I needed was about $400. So I got a list of EVERY glass dealer in town and made my drummer call them all and get quotes. In the end I got both of the pieces I needed for only $160.

no............................you need something way more dense

Thanks for the responses guys. Heres a description of what I'm doing for my studio window. It is a double wall (Two independent sets of framing on steal studs with an 8 inch air gap). There is two layers of drywall on opposite sides of each wall (Leaf spring leaf method). The window is 6' by 4' and I have already purchased the two differing thicknesses of laminated glass.

I am looking for diagrams and/or methods of building and installing the window frame etc. I have read a couple different descriptions of the process which described the air space between the two windows as being completly sealed and enclosed with rigid insulation glued on styrofoam and wrapped in fabric. Acoustic sealent and rubber stripping is used for tight sealing. And they also talked about using silica beads to keep the moisture inside this "chamber" under control.

What type of wood and size do you suggest to build the window frame out of? Currently the window opening is steal studs reinforced with 2 x3's. How should I fasten the window frame to this...nail or screw? And should I use acoustic sealent in between the steal studs and the window frame or is there some other technique? And where and how should the silica beads be installed?

I would seriously suggest using the search function as this has been covered here ad nauseam in the past..................try using "laminated" "glass" "laminated glass" as search terms. In the meantime I'll try and find a couple of other links for you.

OK, you can try John Sayers studio design forums here http://johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/index.php .........or the tutorials John authored which are here .... http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html .........in the left hand index go to "Construction" then use the tabs at the top of the page.
