I sourced a local glass supplier who can custom-make individual panes and got a quote for two sheets of 1.2m (4ft) x 0.76m (2.5ft). One pane will be 8mm thick, the other 10mm. I can get thicker glass if needs be - anything 14mm thick or thinner. Is there any particularly good ratio of sizes or shall I stick with my 8mm/10mm?
Rod has been helping with other parts of the construction but it will take at least two weeks to order this glass so I would like to put the order in by Monday at the latest. If anyone has successfully built their own control room windows before, it'd be great if you could answer these questions..
a) the dimensions are pretty much arbitrary based on what I remember from other studios. Should some kind of special sizing calculation be made that I don't know about? Is that a good sized window considering the wall holding the window will be approx. 3.75m long / 2.7m high?
b) the company can supply either toughened glass or regular glass. Considering that the window will be at least 800mm from the ground and I can legally use either (and don't expect any bricks to be thrown through it any time soon), is there any conceivable advantage to paying double and waiting twice as long for the toughened stuff? Would there be any difference in sound isolation or quality?
