Control Freak and Yamaha A4000

I have a Kenton control freak and a Yamaha A4000 sampler. I'm connecting them via an m-audio 4x4 and my OSX laptop with Cubase SL. The control freak sends fine, it works with virtual synths and cubase. However, nothing I try with the A4000 seems to work. Why won't the A4000 respond to the external controller? Anyone aware of this issue?
