continuous

Another great tune. That album is shaping up quickly. Can't wait for my copy!

The backing vocals did sound slightly off key but fit. They were "comfortable" in a way that drinking buddies might sound while harmonizing accapella when particularly buzzed.

And you changed from "continually" at the beginning to "continuously" and never went back.

You kept this assymmetry just to get under my skin, didn't you?

:)

Great. Masterful simplicity

Like many others said before me...if I was was producing it I may have added some different things. But to me, this is perfect as is.

Nothing beats a great melody and vocal performance. And this track has them. Sprinkle in some interesting bits -- like your really cool vocal harmonies. And it just makes it that much better.

I realy enjoyed listening to this!

toki - I couldn't do this stuff live. I sorta make a lot of that three-part stuff up as I go along. The beauty of overdubbing. 'Didn't work - never mind - try again...'

drstawl - 'continuous' is the adjective, and 'continuously' and 'continually' are the adverbs. As in 'a person is continuous with something or someone, and if they're that way all the time, then they're continous continually'. It's about a state of being sustained through time. But if I shifted from 'continuously' to 'continuously', it's just me being sloppy. Same with the harmonies... :D

Norman V - glad you liked it.

I like to write my reply on these MP3 offerings before I read the other replys so too bad if I'm repeating anything. Right off I'd like to hear more of a room sound -speshully on the vocs. It sounds a bit dry. Cool singing. Some drums would really liven this up. Could use a little compression on the lead vocs- inot a very steady signal?

Cool song. You've got some good ideas. I think the harmonies were my favorite part. The two rythym tracks could come up in the mix a bit IMHO but don't necessarily need to. Good job!

I like that this piece has a positive vibe ---something I personally have a hard time creating in music. I'm with Chris Harris; it leaves me scratching my head as to what it all means.

Another great one dobro. The more I hear from you the bigger fan I become. You've definitely got one of the most unique styles around, in your vocals and your writing. Keep posting...always. :D

Started off with great promise, and on my second listen now, I would add some percussion later on in the mix. It just doesn't give me that feeling that I would listen to it again because it would be basically the same song throughout, I think I'd grow tired of it quickly.

"I think I'd grow tired of it quickly"

Looks like you have already. LOL

Rats - thanks - I'm still struggling with reverb. I track it in a dry room. That's how I hear it when it's performed. That's what tends to get replicated in the mix.

davidlivinstone - the lyrics will make sense to some people immediately, othes after a while, others never. But the music's there in the meantime... I mean, I don't really think about the lyrics to this song much anymore - I mostly tap my foot and hum along...

barometer - drum for a pony.

Dig it. Timing is rock-solid. Love the mouth-trumpet solo and the "uh-la-la-la"s.

I've no idea if you've killed this thread yet, dobro...

...so here's a bump & a review...

You have an almost deliberate Beatles approach with this tune... when the kick comes in, it sounds tight as all get out...

Whoa... i love that progression in the chorus... almost reminds me of Depeche Mode's acoustic version of "Personal Jesus" (I hate DM, but like that song... whew... I'm not a wuss  )

Good song... still building... would be REALLY interesting as a lead in to a full arrangement... you know, crisp drums, cymbals, bass guitar, doubled vox, etc... somehow... I'm thinking it will stick with the more traditional folky approach.

That almost absent synth bass is a very interesting choice... the stacatto rhythm reminds me of Local H's "Bound For The Floor" (which sounds nothing like this, otherwise :D)

One of your better ones, D. Just asking... but is it possible for you to check other people's stuff, and make comments? I'm sure you've done it before... just haven't seen it.

lol... ironically, to my memory it was the other way around. It seemed like a long time before I saw a song from him posted in here. Maybe he had and I'd just missed it. Can't count on my memory. Has he gone all prima-dona rock star on us since I've been around here :D

Okay, I'll respond and then we can let this thread descend slowly to the bottom of the clinic pond.

Participant:

"You have an almost deliberate Beatles approach with this tune... when the kick comes in, it sounds tight as all get out..."

For what it's worth, it wasn't consciously modeled on Beatles stuff, although I'm very pleased at the comparison.

"Good song... still building... would be REALLY interesting as a lead in to a full arrangement... you know, crisp drums, cymbals, bass guitar, doubled vox, etc..."

Well, I tried tripled vox on this one - three times in fact - that's better than doubled vox, right? :D As for drums - yeah, I'm experimenting with drum collaborations, but not having a lot of luck. I'm starting to think that you need to be in the same room as the drummer to get it done with drums - drums are so important and there's so much going on with drums.

"That almost absent synth bass is a very interesting choice... "

It's a real bass. I like lots of treble on real bass for a lot of stuff.

"is it possible for you to check other people's stuff, and make comments? I'm sure you've done it before... just haven't seen it."

What I tend to do is this: if someone comments on one of my songs here and if I see they've posted something in the clinic, I'll listen to it and usually post a review.

mr lewis - I've posted about six tunes here recently, and the responses have been really useful, especially from sjoko. He noticed a basic panning issue. Other people have picked up on sibilance and out-of-tuneness. I think I've learned enough here to mix the rest of the album without posting the tunes here. Well, time will tell... :D

Dobro.

Nice tune!

It's a nice "tight" mix and the instuments were played well. I like the subtle bass drum...it sits perfect in the mix.

Great vocals....nice stereo spread.

Great over all tune..

Once again, the thread will sink when we say so. Yeah, I've checked out a few tunes besides this one and I've been diggin' it. I just remembered a time when I saw comments from you in here but hadn't heard any tunes. Just a neutral recollection and poking a little fun. I'm glad you're posting, and hope you keep doing it.

My only useful comment is "sounds good, keep doing it".

i definitely heard a drum track in my head on this one. it's the first time i've thought one of your tunes was actually missing something. maybe barometer can help???

thanks to mixmkr for the stereo comments. I always wondered how to do that with bass. I do like your bass sound on this. It stood out to me.

keep me on the mailing list for buying your first album. so far my favorite is mineral.

"I think I'd grow tired of it quickly"

Hey man, just a thrown-out comment, most seem to like it as it is.

I made it a point to listen to it again, to me it needs percussion.

rushfan - thanks

pglewis - thanks too. Now can it sink? :D

erichenryus - cheers. You might be right about the drums, but I'm not changing much else on this album. I'm trying to wrap it up so I can move on to some other stuff. I'd like real drums on some other stuff I'm doing though.

lynx - no problem - erichenryus thinks it needs drums, and you talk about percussion. There wasn't a drummer around when I did it, otherwise it might have had drums. My problem is I've never worked with drums before, and because I don't have drums here, I don't hear them when I'm assembling the session.

I read no comments..

normally when I check out a tune, I can reply after hearing it just once.. I had to play this 5 times.. I thought it was a great recording.. You seem like the type who probably has it sounding exactly how you intended, so I won't bother with that.. It's sounds so dry and clean that I have to give you much props just for that.. Were there any effects used on any part of it anywhere? Do you use ultra high end pre's etc.? I'll read through some replies after.. I'm sure you listed the gear.. The first thing I thought of when it started was the Beatles. Which is a great thing.. I stopped thinking about them as it went on.. great stuff..

If I was forced to say something negative, it would be that the beginning harmonys could be tighter.. It's obvious you can, so I would..

I give this a very high thumbs up!
