console or joe meek preamp?

hey,

i have the DBX 286A and the joe meek and personally, the joe meek is miles better, if you're looking for that sound. joe meek stuff just generally sounds warm and clear. i tend to use the DBX every now and again on guitar amps. the de-esser in the 286 is good if you set it up properly. i think the compressor is reeeeeally noisy, and no good either. i wouldn't use it's compressor while tracking, nooo way.

the joe meek can be pushed really really hard, it's got a huge amount of headroom (the vc1 or vc1Q). the headroom is great cus it will capture any loud transients on snare drums or whatever. the compressor can either be totally transparent, or as you push it, you hear that joe meek compression.

with the joe meek, you get a extreemly high quality preamp, plus a truly amazing compressor and a great enhancer.

the dbx has a great high quality preamp, but i think it's compressor is really weak. it uses dbx's overeasy technology, it's not designed to be a final vocal compressor, but i wouldn't use it on tracking either.

i dont think i could have got that vocal sound on the mp3 if i used the dbx.

use your ears (classic line). but take a listen, the joe meek may not have the kinda charachter that you want, then again, neither may the 286A.

ok, i'm gonna buy a meek later on maybe a vc1 or something. i'm gonna go pick up a Presonus MP20 from an old partner of mine that isn't using it. he had a u87 on it so i know any of our mics should sound good on it. how do yall like the mp20? is it a good preamp...
