I'm really thinking about the VF160 .... any input?

yea, I've been thinking about these digital recorders for about a year now. Researching and waiting for money. Luckily I'm getting money back from taxes and I thought I'd put it to good use. And after comparing all the units aroung the same price, I kept coming back to the 160. I'm really excited. Looking to record my three-piece band and maybe some solo stuff.

Just purchased a monitor system too, a three piece system by fostex too. It was about $200 for two satellite monitors and a bass box. Got it from Zzounds.com. They seem to have good deals. Tho I think I'll get the 160 from Musicians Friend. They are running a 0% interest until 2003 special.... woo hoo!! I'm sure I'll be posting here alot once I get it.

We have been using the vf16 and I have found it lacking. I would much prefer one of the new 24 track hds. Theres not enought under the hood of the Fostex and it is limiting. The on board effects, preamps, comp, I dont feel are up to snuff. Only having two cannon jacks is frustrating. Just my 2 cents worth. I guess for a not to ambitious a project it is ok. It is pretty simple to use but to get your tracks out to a computer for further editing is a pain in the ass. You can go from the monitors out to your stereo or whatever you wish.

I've had one for a week...

I've had my VF160 for about a week and it is kicking my arse all over the place. Now, I'm just doing my own home recording, just for me and I've previously been using Cakewalk. Whether any of that has a bearing on my views or not - I don't know.

I'm finding that the sound is crystal clear, it seems quite easy to use and I'm getting great results very quickly. And the price is pretty cool too.

So - no regrets from me so far.

Dave.

welp ... I bought one. Couldnt resist any longer. This will be my first adventure into the realm of "a studio" so I'm really excited.

Dragonworks - yea, I was suprised at the two XLR jacks too. Though it seems that most of the units are set-up like that. That's something that I am trying to remedy with a small mixer. Anyone have any input as to one with 8 XLR's really cheap?

thanks again everyone!

We use a mackie 12 channel mixer for the drummer. When we record the drums we have the snare and kick coming in through the xlrs of the vf16 directily and we route the two overheads and the two tom mics through the mackie and have them come in to the vf16 through two other channels.
I think you could pick up a used 12 channel mackie mixer pretty cheap. I think the drummer paid under 4 bills new for the one he has. I think it only has 6 xlrs though. You could get a used mackie 1604 for around 5 or 6 bills and that would give you 16 xlrs.

The 1604 only has 8 XLR's (or is it 10  ) unless it has the add on bay. The 1604VLZ has 16 XLR's. But you can get a 1202 with 6-XLR's for maybe 350. Less used of course and 6-XLR's might be enough for most things. you'd still have another 6 channels for things that use a 1/4" jack.

Sorry Lt Bob, I have the VLZ and forgot about that. Thats why I am a private and you are a Lt.
