Great tune...Can I lay a new drum and bass line down for it?
HELL YES YOU CAN!!! 150 BPM - PM me when you're done. You done yet? LOL, this whole post is like a cry for help. Most of it's at 150bpm. Chess, if you wanna' save me on this, I'd really owe you, and I'll just retrack everything else to fit.

groucho Do you owe me money or something? LOL. That was the coolest compliment you could have given...to actually pick a line out...and I think I made it up!! I never really know. Like there's this line in one I wrote yesterday, and it's gonna' be something like "that's as wrong as a football bat." Maybe I made that up?? Maybe not. I just don't know. And Elton is a hero of mine, so that was super cool for you to say. Thanks, man. I hope this one gets done "proper" in the near future.

MMM - yeah, the spots you mentioned are driving me nuts, and there are actually plenty more of them...like the whole intro - I was going for that "What would it sound like if the drummer just fell over the front of his kit" vibe...LOL. Thanks a lot for the careful listen, as always - oh, btw - the "amp hum" at the end is actually "people hum." hehehehe... 3 of me; but I've been working on my "60 cycle" chops, so it was cool of you to notice. :D :D

KRAMER - Well, you picked the genre that I'd LIKE to be associated with, so I'm really glad you said that. I also appreciate the song writing comments a lot. I'm actually trying to work on vocal and acoustic sounds, but this just kinda' happened in the middle of it. :D

Part Sissy Rant - Okay, so it's not as good as "HAIR-ASS," but I'm trying. Man, I'm gonna' have to put you on retainer if you don't skip a couple of tunes. Hey, I really REALLY appreciate the detail on the other check, btw - those notes influenced decisions on this one and all to come, I hope. Anyway, I don't know what kind of supersonic hearing you have to detect hiss on this, but I hate you...LOL. (It actually concerns me ALWAYS that I can't hear it; but let me run an idea by you. Do you think it's at least POSSIBLE that what you're hearing is a very high end reverb trail on one of the gits from a "large plate" reverb? - I need to send that track to you to see if I'm completely nuts...LOL. Well, I AM, but you know what I mean). Anyhoo, the timing problems are gonna' get fixed soon. Thank you thank you thank you thank you.

chessrock - I'm just posting your name in here to make sure you read the top, LOL. Done yet? (btw - the 90's alt/vibe is EXACTLY how you need to play the drums and bass....A million thanks...unless you're not done yet, in which case...HURRY UP).

WES480 - I've always meant to ask you; were "WES1 - WES479" taken when you signed up? LOL. I'm agreeing with you on the genre thing...in fact, depending on how the tracks come back from Chess, I'm adding distorted gits to it. Yeah, the crashes and Kicks were added to this "Franken-Kit" by yours truly, and my taste in everything percussive just sucks. Hopefully, it's getting fixed. I tracked the vocals with a C-1 that I'm trying out; the gits were with the neuman...that mic works well for that and that only. I tracked the "bass," (which is really just a Rosewood Acoustic boomy S.O.B. 6 string guitar) and the little git fills with an SM58...it seems to handle the "dynamics" better than the neuman

smellyfuzz - thanks for checking it out...I'm familiar w/ the old 97's but not wfuv; it's my favorite genre, so I'll be checking that out NOW; thanks again.

[DISCLAIMER A'LA "WATYF" STYLE]
when i started this last night, I had no intention of doing this as a full blown tune (thus, the acoustic-ish bass and stuff), but I want to now - so thanks for the inspiration, guys.

I like your bass, so I'll try to imitate it mostly . . . perhaps try and spruce it up a bit. :D I think I have some drum samples I could use that would work a lot better, though. I've been aching to collab with someone . . . Lt. Bob I think has been a little busy. :D I'll let you know when I'm done.

Ya I dig that snare sound for this tune. Seems to sit comfortably to me.

The change to E at :48 is cool. That change definitely sparates this from country... Good for you. ;)

Chris this is my favorite song from you. Seriously I love this.

Harmonies at 2:50 come in sorta hard IMO. Just slightly less aggressive- like 2 db off from the left and right.

You seem to be releasing better first mixes. That's great! This one is very comforting to the ears. Warm...great job. This one's going onto my camping/fly fishing truck HR cd. My new favorite from you... Thanks!

i have to admit, it sounds like country to me....the slide guitar sound is what does it....but still it sounds real good. i would bring the vox forward just a little bit and maybe drop the bass a little or bring the guitars up...depends on what you are going for.........but i dig the song, man it's good to have speakers again so i can download stuff again

Cool tune Chris! Nicely recorded, you have a great voice and the harmonies are perfect. I don't know why, but for some reason it reminded me of Camper Van Beethoven. Well done, great mix.

I agree with the snare being a little too loud, but nothing irritating. The bass could come up a little more, maybe. Nice groove, definitely good performance, especially the vocal.

Nice work. I'm getting kind of sick of hearing all this "oh I just slapped this together" crap  I'm gonna start tracking a new song, probably next week. It will take me several weeks to month to get it done I'm sure :(

I like the song. I like your voice. I would classify this as Americana/Country. Have you heard of Blue Rodeo? They are from Canada, and this kind of reminds me of their style a little. Good recording.

(The snare does kind of rattle in my skull a little by the end of the song. Maybe if it was just a little softer... although I am listenting on my puter speakers 'cause that's all I have :D)

Moving to keepers folder :D

nice country song!

i'm listening to a version that's titled 1_24 so I don't know if that's the version you're on but.......

i don't like the snare drum. seems like i might be alone in that from the other responses but i just don't like it and i actually think i can say why. i typically like real lively snare drums with lots of ring but the ring on this gets a little grating to me after a while. there's just no dymanic element to it and i suppose that's the problem with all sampled instruments and loops in general but that's what's bothering me.

i'm also very opposed to real wide panning on drums. whenever i hear that kind of thing it's like i don't get the implied stereo image. like i'm supposed to be placing my head 5 inches from the kit or sitting side by side with the drumer or something. i guess that's the way it is with all instruments but for some reason the tom panning messes me up whenever i hear it. like they are flying by my head and i'm supposed to try and catch them in the air? enough already....

i like the song. it's got your signature sound which is not unlike Lyle Lovett in a way. Is it country? Is it something else? Whatever it is, I like it.

So what did you go with for the vocal chain. Sounds like a dynamic to me....compressed to the max, which never bothers me.

acoustic in the beginning sounds very good.

interested to hear what chessy comes up with.

later.

I like the capo'd sound of the gtrs, but I don't dig the timing screws that happen every now and then. A good tune, but needs a good production and professional polish. A bass part to give it a good beat/foundation would be my opinion.

snare drum works...but maybe a little something else to go with it, to keep it from sounding like a metronome. Maybe a little loud too.

I Polished The Turd A Bit

Thanks for listening guys...

I kinda' redid a lot of it. A whole lot, actually. One of the biggest differences deals with the drums. I used Participant's kick drum sample, and it seems to bring out the "bass" a lot better.

If anybody who heard one of the previous incarnations could tell me if it's better or worse or similarly shitty, I'd appreciate it.

Timing issues are gone, for the most part. (YES, FOR THE MOST PART)...lol

Thanks again...I'll reply and call you all assholes later.

Chris

(self-indulgent part that nobody will read - Here's what I did: I kinda' standardized the drum "intro" a bit, lol. I retracked some of the vocals; I retracked some git parts to fix timing issues; I totally took all the guitars out during part of the song to give it a little dynamic; I brought the bass up, I changed the kick drum, I added about 1000 crashes and cymbal swells and brought the ride up to give the mix some "sparkle," :D :D - Oh, and when I woke up today, the first thing I did, before I had coffee or anything was to SCREAM two vocal parts at the end. I took Sluice's advice and brought down some bg vox; the big plate reverb on the guitar on the right was sounding like hiss on headphones, so I tamed it a bit, AND...Much to the chagrin of erichenryus, I actually widened the overall stereo field a bit; hrm, what else? Oh, I stayed away from the L1, but I did discover a new EQ preset for mastering that seems to add some soft highs to the whole mix that I kinda' like. Overall, this feels less harsh than most (or all) of my previous mixes. I'd be interested in whether anybody agrees...I wish I'd put this mix up first...dammit.)

Sounds good over here, chris. Any changes from here on out are of the detail variety. Gotta get Keith to hurry up and send you his tracks :)

Thanks very much for taking the time, Chad.

That kick drum...it's all you, man. I just love it.

:D

sound's better to me, chris!! dropped snare fit's nicer(i love it's sound) kick is a huge improvement, song has more drive now.
the only thing i liked better on the last version, was the level of the rythm git, it's not as up front in this mix, and it's a great git sound!! (you prolly didnt touch the level:rolleyes: )lol!
anyway, u go boy!!!

thank's Chris!!

peace

Thanks a ton...I think I agree, Rick, and one of them needs to come up some. I didn't turn the levels on the git down any, but when the drums and the bass and the vocals come up, well...same thing, right? Thanks for the ear.

consequences-schmoncequences as long as im rich

sounds like mic # 1-Like the opening guitars-very bright-gotta love capo's-voice sounds great-performance-excellent as usual-it usually takes me a bunch of listens to pick out lyrics but you always have lines that jump out and grab you first time through. this sounds like a genre busting tune-part folk part rock part country part alternative....cool. So umm ...wheres the solo?? I'm not kidding-a nice semi clean strat tone-maybe a bit of slide? the changes would be cool to play over...
mix sounds good I hear everything-nice acoustic tones-drums are driving the tune nicely-bass is peaking through-BG vocs sound tight. No complaints from me-good tune good mix. Actually I heard a few drum /cymbal things that tipped off they were programmed-thats my only tiny complaint..

I thought you said you were crap. This is really good. Hey, where'd you pan that guitar? It sounds right up the center. If I was producer on this mix (thanks, and a tip of the hat to crawdad for a license to throw my weight around :D) I'd want more muscle on the drums - 2 dB more would be the simple way. I'd want more definition on the bass. I like the singing and the guitar. I'm happy with the song. Which is exactly the thing I'm struggling with in my own mixes - the bass and the drums.

Finally, what a very nice feeling this song has. :)
