King of Bling
Okay, I posted a thread yesterday to start buggin ya'll for gear check mixes. This started out as another glorified mic check, but then, the more I got into it, the more I decided I might want to keep this song.

I don't know yet.

I know that I hate drums...LOL. Oh, nice...I see I got the ride backwards... BAHAhahahaha... screw it. Wow, that snare's loud.

Oh, and I'm continuing my boycott of guitar solos with this song.

:D
:D

Good Luck!!!

CONSEQUENCES

CHrIShaRrIS - ÛÑô¥£çþ懢€‡ŒŽµØѱŠ

(this song is a perfect example of why I could never make any money in the music business...what genre is it? Please offer an opinion...and the first person who says "country" gets flamed. )

i don't think the snare is necissarily loud....but it does sound a little odd.............having said that, i have no idea how to fix it.....mixing drums is always one of the hardest parts for me.........

the background vocals sound great........so does the acoustic.....

good song......solid chorus........i like it

great mix for a mic check

Thanks Powderfinger - In honor of you, I've done a remix. LOL.

Taking the cans off makes a BIG difference. So I grabbed a cup of coffee, smoked about 4 cigarettes, and resang it.

Oh yeah, and where there are drum fills that could never actually be played a human drummer... they're covering some other mistake... :D :D I really LOVE the way the starts with a huge drum fuck up. I mean, no sense keeping the listener waiting for it, right?

what do you use for drums? Was there a kick? Can't hear it on my pc speakers here at work. That snare drum sounds pretty accurate. Like you're in the room with it. Shell resononce. I like that. I get sick of gated and OCP drums that are nothing but "crack". Anywho.. good song. I love how you throw the signature C.H. guitar lick in there. :D

nothing wrong with starting with drum fuck ups........on my song 'alright w/ me' it has some random ass drum hits at the beginning, and i left them in so long that i actually like them now.......they're part of the song now......

you probably didn't change anything on the drums, so it will make me sound like i'm talking out my ass.......but they do sound a little better........maybe it's familiarity, maybe you ctually did something......who knows........they sound alright though.....

the vocals are great........very tight sounding harmonies

JR#97 - hehehee... I have a "signature" guit lick. It's so true, though. When I'm trying to add filler like that to just give the tune a little bit of a stereo field, I usually do it in one take, so I'm not breaking any new ground. LOL.

I think there's a kick in there. I'll go look. :D (mas kick for mix no. 3). Actually, I've noticed that it only shows up when I hit the "loudness" button...So I need to fix that...

Powderfinger - thanks for listening again. I actually did do a couple of things to the drums...EQ'd the snare to bring it down a little, and just slapped a boatload of reverb on all the drums...It's like secret sauce...just use it on everything. REVERB- IS THERE ANYTHING IT CAN'T DO? Okay, you're exempt from listening for at least 2 days. :D

Well my friend, I imagined looking over n' winkin at Dr John, and the pretended to poke that ol wild eyed Ry Cooder in the ribs. We all kinda twisted our moustaches and giggled. Thats when I poured us another round and put the 45 back on to play again and we all just smiled....... :)

I like the sound, really fine...

lol... I have to say as soon as I heard your voice, I thought "country!". Heh

The accent or the twang in your voice has that countriesh feel (sorry ;) )

Its a great song though. The mix is really nice (I'm no pro). It feels really clean, and holds together nicely. I definately think you have a good thing going here, and I bet most people wish they had this quality of mic check!

Thanks :)

Adam

Are we allowed to say alt.country? Or there were a couple alt/pop bands with that sort of sound (not the Rembrandts, but sort of in that same space) - Toad the Wet Sprocket maybe? My head's all cluttered up with Classic Rock factoids, can't keep the alt bands straight.

Anyhow, great song - well constructed, nice blend, nice groove. Voices and guitar were perfect for that style, whatever it is.

I'm basically listening on AM radio speakers, so can't really speak to the mix, but the snare was up and I couldn't hear kick.

Toki 987 - Thank you, I think...LOL. Your post made me smile.

Adams - It's the "r's", among other things...LMAO. I chew the snot out of my "r's," which results in an automatic deduction of about 50 IQ points for anybody who doesn't know me, and it places my tunes in the "country" genre. I just need to accept it and move on. Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of counrty music, and I write some straight country songs, but this isn't one of them. :D :D Thanks a ton for checking it out.

dafduc - Okay, now your post made my day. You listed one of my favorite bands of all time. :D :D And yes, "Alternative Country" suits me just freakin' fine. Thanks for the mix comments too...I know comp. speaks aren't really known for thumping the bass, but that's about the 3rd comment I've gotten on "NO KICK DRUM," so there is one now. Actually, there are 2 kicks, because I couldn't undo the drum loop...so I had to just paste in a totally inappropriate kick for this song; but it's cool, because I'm calling it "alternative country." Again, thanks for playing.

mix 3 (wha??? already????) Yes, mix 3

That is fucking HELLA SOUND! I love it... What are you using for drums.. DDDAMMMMN that is a great acoustic sound...

I love it Chris...

P.S.

The snare works if it listen to the mix as a whole but something is not right if I center on the snare... Hmmmm. Dunno...

Anyway HELLLA SOUND!

I dunno Chris, this whole genre thing is so subjective. It's close to country, but not quite. I know, you're a crossover artist......Yeah, that's it, a crossover artist! Or it could be progressivenewagetechnofunk if you added a synth.:D

But seriously, it's a good tune, and I think it would appeal to a fairly broad audience. Ya know like Jimmy Buffet. Everybody likes Jimmy Buffet ('cept maybe metalheads). It's feel good music.

HAHAHAhahaha...well, I see you got the "L1" version. I haven't been using any of the sonic cheaters lately (BBE Sonic Maximizer, etc,), because all they do is amplify my crappy sounds. LOL. But I actually think the L1 helped this time. I'm sure that'll be dispelled in a matter of minutes, though with the inevitable "sounds too compressed" comments, but your post made me feel good for the moment, Scott.

For drums, I'm using the same thing you are, I think. The basic loop is a loopology one for CoolEdit. It's that "Rock" kit with the picallo...(not the rock kit with the Creed snare)...but the snare's so much louder than the kick that I reinforced it with another kick drum...I have no idea where I got it. I don't care if everybody who posts after this bitches about the drums now...I'm framing your post. :D

twist - You're right about the genre thing...I don't know why I even care...it's not like major radio markets are beating down my door for an explanation, right?

Oh, and I used to love Jimmy Buffet, but something about playing "Margarittaville" in a bar about 4,000 times just kinda' turns you sour. LOL. Thanks for checking it out.

You mean there's such thing as too much L1?? :)

I love the L1 like you love autotune, I think.

You know, the best songs get created from messing around, I encourage it!

"wore you like my skin".... yes!

Great freakin' song, man. I love it all. The only thing would be that snare sound, which I might not have noticed had you not mentioned it was a loopology loop (I've used that one myself I think). The snare sound itself is fine - it's just that it's exactly the same each time, which is one of those things niggly little problems with using loops. I tend to mess around with raising and lowering the volume slightly on individual parts of the loop, compressing a little - then a lot - etc., to try to give a little breath to the loops. But this is a long tedious process that is rarely noticed by anyone I'm sure...

And hey, me & my girl (girlfriend, not offspring by the way:)) both appreciate much the fullversion of Levon. I gotta say I much prefer it to Elton's version. And I mean MUCH. This sounds like the way this song was intended to be done.

a credit to the name, this chrisharris, yes indeed...

Real nice Chris. I liked the song a lot. Great feel to it. Liked the melody and harmonies.

So much talk around drums.... sigh. I view them as a necessary evil. emphasis on the evil :) only kidding.

The bass stuck out to me as sounding real nice. I really liked the tone and how the part complimented the song.

There's a little harmony glitch around the "...naturally familiar" line around 1:35 or so. Another small sync-thing from 2:35-2:39. Some smaller ones in other spots. The little guitar fill right before that seems a small bit off rhymically.

A second or two of amplifier hum at the end. But I kind of liked the effect.

Minor things. Again I really liked the song. Trip.

Sounds like Austin influenced singer/songwriter/pop stuff to me man.Really good song with clever lyrics.Nice melody and hook Chris. This is one of those songs thats so well written and sung that all mix comments are thrown out the window because the song is stronger than any mix you could come up with.....a killer mix wont fix a shitty song.....obviously you dont have that problem. This is good stuff.

Aside from some hiss... mix sound really good. The "drum solo" (heh) in the intro is cool. Kick definitely isn't missing in my computer speakers here....

Nice double-time ride cymbal in the chorus.

There is a country flavor to it... think it's that "boom/tick boom/tick" of the kick/snare. Add your voice, & voila. It's in the same genre as the late, headless John Denver's stuff.

I like the walky bass in this (and usually I don't like walky bass)... the trebly bass fills really suit this song.

The dissonant ending was hella cool. Niiiiiice.

Great tune.

Killer accoustic guitar work . . . except for somewhere in the middle where they kinda' lose the tempo (about 1:30 or so). :D

Everyone keeps talking about the genre . . . this is early/mid 90's college radio ala REM.

Can I lay a new drum and bass line down for it?

diggin' it chris.

as far as genre...i think the song itself could go a lot of different ways...the way you are doing it here, you are right, it doesn't have a lot of "character" genre wise...it's more like a songwriters demo.

but imagine (and i'm serious on this one)...the current Bon Jovi sound applied to the same song...big more washed out/layered harmonies, electric rhythm guitars...

It wouldn't be that far of a stretch...I think this song has a lot of "rock" feel to it. And I think you are feeling that as well, pushing the vocals in certain places.

Kick drum and the crash cymbal are killing me...when you gonna tackle the real drums..:D

I'm still trying to hear the signature chrisharris lick...I feel like I should recognize it. Maybe it's been a while since I heard the other stuff. What's the time mark on the signature lick?

What mic are you using for vocals these days?

All in all I think this is sounding really good man. Guitars sound good.
