how do ya'll hook up comps and eq to your mixer for mix down..
do you put it in the aux sends and then returnd them in the effect returns or do you put them in the inserts of each individual channel?

Compressors and eq would be on the inserts. You would use the aux sends for things like reverb and delay.

You could also set up an aux send for compression if you wanted to compress a group of things... but then you would have to use *only* the return signal from that aux bus, and not the dry output from each individual channel that is sent to that bus, unless you wanted some sort of mix between the two in the final mix.

I suppose that would be useful for compressing a set of drum tracks, perhaps... not much else comes to mind - I've certainly never had to do it :)

does that mean that if i put a comp in channel 1 insert but also want to compress channel two i have to get another comp so i can plug it in the insert of channel 2?

Yes. In that case, you have two compressors on different channels that you can change settings on individually. If you want to compress multiple channels with the same compressor, you can do as I said, but usually you want different settings for compression on different sources.

If your mixer has busses you would assign whichever channels you wanted compressed to a buss (or pair of busses for stereo), and then send that to the compressor.

How i have done it in the past is that i use insert for compression, aux for effects (and my mixer's eq for eq). Since i was going from something that was already recorded off my pc, i submixed things and also used plug ins. But that's how i did it and had results i was happy with.
