I have an M Audio Buddy preamp that I'm trying to hook up to my computer. I have a 1/4" cable that goes out from the preamp, but what kind of device do I need to get this into the computer? The sound card I have is "SB LIVE!" I've tried to cut corners a guess by thinking I could plug the preamp into the 1/4" to 1/8" adapter, into the microphone jack, and get it to work (however foolish that was). I also tried the line-in, but still: nothing. I'm getting a faint buzz, but nothing more. Somebody said I need a device called a breakout box because my signal was way too "hot." So I guess I need a breakout box and a way to hook it up to my computer. Could anybody help me? I don't know where to start or what to look for.

I'm planning on doing armature, mostly just playing around, so I'm planning on something very simple. Maybe even just with one input, if they make them that simple.

Many people might suggest I get a better sound card. I might some day, but for the stuff I'm trying to do now--which is extremely beginner--I'd like to keep it simpler, if possible. However, if a new sound card is the only way, I'm willing to do it.

Well, as you can tell I'm a little confused about how this all works, could someone help me out?

I'd really appreciate it!

sounds like you need to get your software program to recognize the sound card. Im not the one to answer this, but mabye someone else could.

breakout box?

no you should be able to run a line out from your preamp to the line in on your soundcard. Check the windows mixer and the creative software mixer (if there is one) to be sure that the line in box is checked and not the mic in. Make sure that the line in is the imput source in your software. Check the recording window under windows control panel.
