Connecting a mic to the Boss BR-600

Hi Guys, I have been using the Boss BR 600 for a while now using a behringer T100 connected via a pre-amp through my Yamaha Stagplus PA mixer.

I am getting a lot of hum and thought I would try and mic direct to the BR 600 via the mic jack inputs but I cannot get any levels from the condenser mic or even my trusty Shure 58... I have the unit input mode set to mic and have the level indicators at midpoint but have no levels showing... anyone know what might be the problem. Is there another setting I need to use...??? Any advice would be greatly appreciated ..ta muchly!

Well, you can't use a condensor plugged directly into it - the BR600 does not have phantom power. The SM58 should work just fine - if you are using a XLR-TRS adapter (the recorder comes with one) or an XLR-TRS cable.
