Confusion here....regarding mixers to a soundcard

Some posts I've read on here say that you can use the channel inserts as "outs" on a mixer when the mixer isn't a 4 bus. Other places I've read that you need a 4 bus mixer if you want to record 4 different tracks simultaneously to a Delta44 or 1010. What is the really truth on this? Can I use a 2 bus mixer and use 2 channel inserts as outs to the soundcard to achive this...or do I need a 4 bus mixer?

Cheers!

You can use anything you want as long as you're able to get 4 discrete line-level signals into the Delta inputs. I've used the inserts of my Mackie as well as a Great River outboard preamp to get inputs to my Delta 44. I don't think I've ever used the 3/4 Out or Main Out of my board. My Main Out is hooked to my monitors, and the 3/4 is used for headphone mixes while tracking.
