thank you

Well, what synthesizer? And how do you connect it? To record MIDI, you can either record them using MIDI keyboard connected to your PC via MIDI, or "draw" the notes in Piano Roll View / Staff View.

Your question is kind of confused. You can't "hear" MIDI tracks. MIDI is a description of the parameters of a performance and needs to be interpreted by something, either a soft-synth or hardware synth. So, if you're trying to "listen" to the MIDI tracks themselves, then no, you won't hear anything. If you're saying that you have the output of the MIDI track routed to the E-Mu and you can't hear IT, then there's a problem.

I'm not familiar with Cakewalk HS, but I use SONAR. Have you enabled the Audiophile's MIDI interface in HS? I haven't used this program, but somewhere, you will need to tell the program what MIDI interface you are using. Look for a "Preferences" or "MIDI" tab somewhere in the Menu bar.

Try a simple experiment. Load a project that has MIDI files in it. First see if the MIDI tracks play back through the computer. It should, if you load it properly, load and playback through software. If that works, try changing one of the MIDI tracks output to the Audiophile.

Of course, another obvious question is do you have the MIDI "OUT" of the Audiophile connected to the MIDI "IN" on the E-Mu and vice versa?

These are generic suggestions. Unless you give much more specific information as to what's happening and exactly what you've tried to fix it, there's little more that we can tell you.
