I started this new thing. Anyone that comes over to my place to jam gets a free cat.

Are Behringer cats worth the money?

My favorite are the folks who have the knowledge to help, but when someone asks something that they think they "should know", then they say something sarcastic or totally off topic in order to punish them or force them to use the search function or just plain chase them away so they won't have to answer any more of their stupid questions.

Yea, but this is usually followed up by about three or four other knowlegeable guys not only tripping and fumbling over themselves to answer the dumb guy's question . . . but defending his honor and promptly chastising the offending party at the same time. :D It's truly a bizarre and unusual environment. How many times in normal waking life do you get chastised, only to have four or five strangers stand up for you, and to help pick up the scattered pieces of your fragile and forver-shattered ego? :D

I *love* doing that....... there are a lot of idiots out there that don't know how stupid they really are! :p

And besides........ how many times are we supposed to answer the same fucking question over and over and over again before telling someone to either RTFM* or UTFSE**.....! ;)

RTMF - read the fucking manual
UTFSE - use the fucking search engine

Unfortunatly there is just as much misinformation being spread as there is usefull information. At least I've learned who I shouldn't listen to and who I can count on not to post crap....That is unless you guys have been fucking with me !

I'll tell you right now don't ever listen to anything I have to say ! (get it? :o )

Eye for an Eye..

Truth, Justice, and the America Way...the feeling that you get what you give, what goes around comes around. To be part of the Scout pack. Maybe, I'll just post something online rather than work on a song, because I'm unmotivated currently. Or maybe just to seperate the wheat from the chaff here, then go to Harmony Central to compare their responses to a piece of equipment. The one with the most favorable responses wins.

Sorry, did I touch a nerve? :p

I suppose you shouldn't be expected to answer the same question over and over and over again to the same person. You'd think they'd get it the first couple of times. However, when someone new comes along who hasn't heard the question asked or answered..........................

This is Homerecording.com for goodness sake, not Prorec. One would expect to get a few newbees wandering in. Responses aren't required. Why not just ignore if you don't feel like being helpful? Why be a bully?

Blessings, Terry

Nope, not at all... I just was answering your question, somewhat tongue-in-cheek (didja notice the smileys?)

BTW, was it you that censored the word "fucking" in your quote of my post? If so, nice editing Flanders!

As to the "this is homerecording" comment -- I've said it before - I'm sure the resident pros here would be happy to leave if you really want them gone, allowing the novices and rookies plenty of opportunity to argue over which Radio Shack mic best captures the sound of a Sears guitar thru a Crate amplifier.........

Just because it's "homerecording", doesn't mean people shouldn't actually learn proper recording techniques to help better their recording skills.

What strange, bizarre, unusual planet have we stepped in to on this BBS where it seems like everyone is just flinging knowlege around, left and right, like it grew on the damn trees or something ? ? ?

I don't know.

Bravo. I am currently experimenting to find the ideal spot to place my cassette deck with the built-in mic (and AGC) for the best results.

APL,

My sincere thanks for the use for cats link!

I have tendonitis now in my index finger....One thing i did not like is there is not enough cat left even for a caserole or a side dish.

Someday I will start my Free to Fry nonprofit organization wich will unite the hungry and homeless people with the hungry and homeless cats. Recipe books will be included with each cat at no cost.

Every homeless cat deserve a warm if somewhat acidic home.

I suppose on the subject of helping each other I need to start a cat recipe thread.

As to the "resident pros", I certainly wouldn't want them to leave. I would however, expect them to understand that this is a "home recording" BBS, and that they will probably be fielding questions from amateurs much of the time. I think it is great that they desire to help folks who are just starting out. It would be a lot tougher for anyone to learn something here, if they had to rely on information from the smart alecs. We need the pros around here. To my knowledge, it is not the "real" pros who feel the need to make fun of newbees.

Tell me how folks can "actually learn proper recording techniques to help better their recording skills" when they are given misleading or just plain wrong advise from someone who knows better, just because that someone feels like being mean or doesn't like the way they asked the question.

Blessings, Terry

If I'm working on a big project and it's in the final rendering or burn stage, I've got some time on my hands. So, I like hanging out on the forums because....

(A) It's good "karma" - Everyone was a newbie at some point.
(B) Teaching is like learning all over again. It's a good thing.
(C) Networking - Also a good thing. Familiarity and trust. A problem shared is a problem compressed at approximately 2:1.
(D) Good business sense. I'll admit it. A nice (and at first completely unexpected) side-effect of hanging on the forums is that I get a decent amount of business from other forum users. Many home studio people work with lots of bands. Many home studio people will be commercial studio people at some point, even if that commercial facility is IN their home.
(E) The most important - Spreading good technique and theory is the best thing. The whole of the community benefits from it. "A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle."

[EDIT] Although, questions like "what's the best setting for a compressor?" can make almost anyone slap their own head, you know? [/EDIT]

Also, because it's healthy and beneficial for people to learn how to think for themselves . . . just a little. Sometimes. It may hurt in the short-term, but in the longrun, I believe it's for their own good.

Hey, I'm more than happy to help someone out if they give even the slightest indication that they've at least attempted to help themselves first. Some people seem to think that easy, quick answers should be available to them free . . . and it should be delivered with a smile like a McDonald's drive-thru. I realize it's part of our society, but c'mon man. You're getting free advice. Your ego will live. And if your feelings are hurt, they will eventually heal. Buck up, camper!

I agree with that: when a question is posed that is easily answered by a look at the manual (for those of us who buy our software), or a cursory Google search, then I'm not making the best use of my time by responding. Maybe we could simply not answer the really lame queries rather than by calling names.

And while I'm on the subject, let's add "What is the ideal recording setup?" to the list of meaningless questions. The answer is, THERE IS NO IDEAL SETUP and if there were, it'd be obsolete by the time it was posted. Buy good basic gear: your ears and your experience will dictate your upgrades. A very little reflection will reveal that everyone who gets good results does so because they learned the ins and outs of recording one step at a time from the bottom up, not because they bought "THE" mic or "THE" motherboard or "THE" you-name-it. "What's the ideal tool box?" Same question, different noun. Do you think Jeff Gordon somehow stepped out of high school into a top NASCAR ride? That's what you're expecting to do.

The best threads are the interesting questions and the ones where someone's read a load and has some focussed questions. I'm pretty clueless as a recordist but it is most certainly my responsibility to lose the ego so I can ask some pretty basic questions. I mustn't pretend to be better than I am!

With that in mind - What are the best settings for a compressor? I'm using a microphone, and I want to record music :p:p;)

It's important to plug it in first. If you have any more questions, you know where to go.
