Conducting research on the unusual amount of "Helfpulness" on this board.

I have decided to conduct a thorough scientific / pshychological study in to what I consider to be a very unusual sociological phenomenon on this board. The phenomenon I am refering to is the unusual amount of knowlege-sharing and helpfulness that seems to prevail as the norm.

You see, as many of you are probably aware, in normal walks of life, it is often difficult to get answers to even the most basic of questions that we have. Take . . . oh . . . I don't know . . . pro audio and microphones, for example.

You see, under normal social conditions, if you should approach a group of strangers and ask them "What's the difference between a dynamic and a condenser?" . . . you are most likely to be met with some combination of blank stares, looks of confusion, and perhaps even a goodly amount of ridicule and/or obscene gestures.

Using the same methodology, if you were to try calling several local recording studios and asking for their chief engineer . . . or perhaps the local professor at the nearest audio school . . . you'd more than likely be met with an answering machine. And it's very likely that no one would call you back. Unless it was to try and sell you some studio time. :D And speaking of selling . . . you could also try the local Guitar Center, where you are more than likely going to be met by those who's sole concern is to molest you the second you walk though the door with sales tactics.

Such phenomenon have led me to sheer and utter curiosity and/or amazement at the unusual levels of . . . . kindness and helpfulness displayed on this board. So much so, that I feel it necessary to conduct a study on it. Think about it: if real life were like this board, you would be able to approach a random group of strangers . . . ask a question. And not only would several stand up to give you an explanation, but you also might even get knowlegable opinions from experts in the industry . . . professional engineers . . . even the manufacturers themselves. All in all, you might be looking at 10-15 responses, on average . . . every one of them offering advice to you on their time, and completely free of charge to you . . . all in the name of educating you and answering your questions, based on their opinions and experiences.

Indeed, some of them might even fight amongst themselves in an effort to make sure the answers they give you are objective and free of bias.

Man, talk about service!

Anyway, I'd be most interested in hearing your opinions to help out in my study. Like why on earth is there such an unusual concern for educating other people? What strange, bizarre, unusual planet have we stepped in to on this BBS where it seems like everyone is just flinging knowlege around, left and right, like it grew on the damn trees or something ? ? ? Why have generosity and unbiased, unsolicited expert opinion been allowed to run so rampant?

This I would like to get to the bottom of.

Reasons people post:

1) My dick is bigger than yours (unless you're Dubya - then you have the biggest dick of all -as vice president, no less)

2) You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours

3) I can't get anybody to notice me in real life because I'm such a wimpy nerd - I'll remake myself in cyberspace as Joe Cool

4) I have some knowledge I'd like to share with other interested folk

#4 is seldom used, and only as a last resort on the mic forum. :)

I bought the damn computer and all of this gear, my recordings suck and I want to share my frustration and the few tidbits I know with others because it's the only real value I am getting out of the whole experience.

And those are just the other customers--The salespeople are even worse!
:D

LOL...

Sometimes I feel like an idea sponge. I like that feeling. :D

My breath smells of cat food....

Anyhow, in my position, it's just nice to spend some time talking and learning about a hobby. I learn way more here than I would if I read some magazine articles, most of which are biased (countless Behringer inputs etc). It's fun, and people actually enjoy being helpful. Go figure-8

Seriously, it is very cool. I like sharing knowledge. I think if I was standing around in a group of strangers, but knew they were all involved in recording to some extent, I'd have the same conversations. Maybe the cyber dialogue makes it easier because you don't have the normal social anxieties hounding you as you ask and answer.

Hmmmmm, that makes me think about something, an interesting research topic. How many people start threads, log in as someone else and reply to themselves? How many who do flame themselves? How many gush over themselves? How many cyber-personalities could one person have?

If I didn't share my vast expertise with everyone, and convince them that "my" way is the best way, they might make recordings that sound better than mine and my self-esteem would suffer.

My breath smells like cats....the strange thing is my wife keeps bringing them home and they just keep running away. How are they getting out of the house anyway?

Yeah Chessrock,

I was wondering: "Why am I doing this?" I could not find a better answer than: "Probably I am a nice guy?"

It's like when you finish a session and are sitting around in the studio just chewing the fat, the engineer might show you something really cool, like an old amp he bought at an auction or an effects pedal his buddy made from some plans. Then you might talk about different miking technique or what guys used to do thirty years ago...

It's should be about bonding and talking about things of similar interest--it's what guys already do in real life, but don't always have the time, or maybe they don't know that many other guys in real life that are into recording. I only one friend that's at the same level as me, and we can get lost talking about gear and recording for hours.

There are cool guys and jerks everywhere, but you can usually just ignore the jerks. I'd rather talk about recording and music.

Who Knows. . .

I hope that people are helpfull cause they want to be. But maybe they just want to know that other people have less experience than them and therefore they get an ego boost, they have all of this knowledge and have to spill it out somewhere(use it or lose it mentality), Crazy, obsessed musicians need somewhere to associate with other crazy, obsessed musicians, maybe this is the only way to get any feedback due to home recording being a very solitary existence (in my case).

All of the above, none of the above, some of the above?

Who Knows!

My favorite are the folks who have the knowledge to help, but when someone asks something that they think they "should know", then they say something sarcastic or totally off topic in order to punish them or force them to use the search function or just plain chase them away so they won't have to answer any more of their stupid questions.

Other than that, this is a wonderfully, helpful place. :D

Blessings, Terry

and cats...

I started this new thing. Anyone that comes over to my place to jam gets a free cat. They don't have to take them home, they just have to take them.

anyways. helpful information. I still haven't gotten an answer to which exhaust system is best on a 1973 Winnebago, especially with the Texas Special seats when hauling a dilapadated U-haul trailer.

any thoughts.
