Condensing dynamic phantoms

I was looking at this Mackie 1402VLZ.

It has a single switch on the back to turn the phantom power on and off.

I was wondering, what if I want to use both dynamic mics and condenser mics simultaneously?

For instance, what if I want to use a couple SM57's with a Rode NT1 to record a drum set using this 1402VLZ? Won't I need phantom power switches for each specific channel? Will one single switch do it?

I'm a little confused as to how this is done.

Don't worry about it ... you won't hurt anything by running phantom power to your dynamic mics at the same time as your condensors.

Don't forget!

BigKahuna is correct about being able to engage a Global Phantom Power switch with dynamic mics in the mix.

But, if you ever use a Ribbon mic, you cannot have Phantom power on at all to it or you will fry the mic!

Good day!

Other procedural techniques aimed at preserving your equipment while working with phantom power:
Don't turn the phantom power on until the condenser mics are connected. That is, don't plug them in while the power is applied. Also: turn them off and wait about 30 seconds before disconnecting them. If this is voodoo and I've been performing this ritual sacrifice for nothing- will somebody speak up and let me know! :)

Hey drstawl.

I think that when you are connecting the cable to the mic, you don't really need to excercise this precaution. Nothing hurt by doing so though right? :)

Now where you would really want to be careful is if you have your microphone cable hooked up to a patch bay and maybe you want to route the mic to a different preamp. You can figuratively short the pin carrying the 48v and the ground, which will quite effectively mess up your preamp. The sparks are pretty in a dark control room. Please don't ask how I know this! An embarrassing day, and NEVE's are not cheap to fix!

Good day!

yeah I've done that Sound Cracker - but with cannon plugs you are OK cos the earth pin is longer and always connects first.

Is that how it's done?

This sounds a little weird to me, and here's why: The powered mixer that I use at school has phantom power. We use dynamic mics. When the phantom power is engaged, there's a lot of NOISE. So does this mean that there's something wrong with the setup at school?

Yep..... when U turn phantom pwr on U shouldn't notice anything change...... minus your condensers will be working =)

Phantom pwr = There when U need it, disappears when U don't(like a phantom) heheh, the easy way to remember it.
